10/29/2003 - Wasabi Systems, Inc., announced that it is demonstrating a large scale implementation of its Storage BuilderTM for iSCSI Appliances at the Storage Networking World conference in Orlando. The fully operational demonstration system in Wasabi's booth PP1 exhibits the ability of using off-the-shelf hardware components to create large scale, cost-effective, IP-based storage arrays.
Specifically, the demonstration features drive enclosures from Rackable Systems; server motherboards from Intel EPSD; RAID controllers from 3ware; and serial ATA drives from Seagate and Western Digital. The system contains a total of 6.8 TB of iSCSI-based storage in a direct attached storage configuration with Microsoft Windows 2000 Server NAS head using the Microsoft iSCSI initiator. Each of the four drive units contain two arrays that are configured as RAID 5, with Striping across the drive unit arrays, and all four units Striped as a NTFS RAID 0 array. This achieves a RAID 5+0+0 overall configuration to optimize performance while providing security, ease of porting, and flexibility. In this configuration, the storage array is capable of wire-speed read and write performance.
"Wasabi is working hard to help OEM's create large-scale IP-based storage systems that leverage off-the-shelf components to greatly simplify the process of designing and building this type of appliance," said Frank G. Logan, III, President and CEO of Wasabi Systems. "We expect to announce the adoption of this technology by several OEM's in the near future."
"Rackable Systems shares a vision of leveraging inexpensive, modular building blocks in support of scalable storage solutions," said Tom Barton, President & CEO of Rackable Systems. "The combination of our servers for the data center with Wasabi's Storage BuilderTM clearly demonstrates the power of leveraging off-the-shelf components for iSCSI storage solutions."
