10/29/2003 - PMC-Sierra(TM), Inc. (Nasdaq:PMCS) announced IPricot, a manufacturer of broadband communication equipment over satellite, has selected its 64-bit MIPS-based(TM) family of ExposedPad(TM) packaged microprocessors for IPricot's next generation family of satellite IP routers. IPricot's satellite routers are designed to deliver broadband services to large corporations, network operators and integrators, and Internet Service and Content Providers. By utilizing PMC-Sierra's ExposedPad packaged microprocessors, IPricot can build one platform that can be deployed for multiple products and next generation digital TV communications products thereby reducing board and software re-development costs.
"By integrating PMC-Sierra's innovative ExposedPad package microprocessors into our satellite IP routers solutions, we are providing one common footprint for a large scale of CPU performances," said Yves Le Henaff, chief science officer at IPricot. "The ability to build one platform for multiple products will offer maximum flexibility, save in design costs and accelerate our products to market."
"PMC-Sierra's 64-bit MIPS-based microprocessors deliver unprecedented scalability to IPricot's digital communication products by providing seamless pin-compatible upgrades in performance and the ability to add more features such as L2 cache in the same footprint," said Tom Riordan, vice president and general manager of PMC-Sierra's Microprocessor Products Division. "With speeds available from 250MHz to 900MHz, our customers can select the current performance level required and be assured they can increase their performance for future upgrades without incurring board and software design costs."
Building One Platform for Multiple Products Reduces Design Costs
PMC-Sierra's RM5231A(TM) MIPS-based microprocessor is designed into IPricot's IPR-Sc and IPR-S500 satellite IP DVB router receivers. As an early adopter of PMC-Sierra's seamless scalability solution, IPricot has also selected the cost-effective RM5261A(TM) ExposedPadpackage, available in speeds up to 400MHz, for their low end products designed to meet the needs of enterprise, agency, kiosk or SOHO markets that require basic type applications such as Internet access, file transfer, push and multimedia functions. IPricot is using the same platform with the higher performance RM7965(TM) microprocessor, available in the same footprint and in speeds up to 900MHz, to meet the increased processing requirements for their higher end products, which are suited for backbone connectivity, video distribution and network monitoring.
