GlobespanVirata Rolls Out PRISM GT Chipset with High-Speed USB 2.0

(NASDAQ: GSPN)a leading supplier of broadband communications solutions for service provider, enterprise and consumer markets, announced the availability of its next generation PRISM GT chip set featuring (Universal Serial Bus) USB 2.0 interface support. PRISM GT enables WLAN manufacturers to easily design 802.11g high-speed USB 2.0 WLAN adapters for desktop or notebook computers. The new PRISM GT-based USB 2.0 wireless network adapters will connect directly to any USB-ready PC -- just plug it in and you're ready to share data, printers, or high speed Internet access over your existing wireless network. In PC’s which support the USB 2.0 interface, the PRISM GT chip set combined with USB 2.0 yields an optimal marriage - the high data rate of 802.11g wireless plus the high-speed connection provided by the USB 2.0 interface, equals maximum throughput for wireless PC users.

The new PRISM GT 2.0 USB solution enables WLAN manufacturers to design innovative new products that are 100% compliant to the 802.11g standard and the USB 2.0 standard, while remaining 100% backward compatible with legacy USB 1.0 and 1.1 products. USB 2.0 effectively increases throughput between the wireless USB adapter and the PC up to 480 Mbps. "People using USB 2.0 PCs get the maximum benefit of 802.11g high-speed PRISM GT (54 Mbps) combined with the fast USB 2.0 interface. Existing 1.0 and 1.1 USB products can also benefit from the faster throughput (54 Mbps) provided by our PRISM GT wireless solution," commented Ciaccia.

Designed to be 100% compliant to the IEEE 802.11g standard for Wireless LAN products operating in the 2.4 GHz band, the PRISM GT solution incorporates GlobespanVirata’s PRISM SingleSourceTM Driver Suite with PRISM NitroTM technology and sets new standards in world-class power, performance, software, and security. PRISM Nitro provides up to a 3x improvement in performance for 802.11g clients operating in mixed-mode wireless networks and up to 50% greater throughput performance in 802.11g only networks. Improved performance, integration and a reduction in total bill of materials have resulted in an improved cost for PRISM GT.

PRISM GT beats the competition with up to 75% better power consumption
GlobespanVirata’s PRISM PowerSaveTM power management technology achieved the lowest standby current, receive current, and average idle current in direct testing against competitor’s 802.11g solutions, while also meeting the USB 2.0 bus-powered specification. PRISM GT’s Power Save Mode achieved both the lowest average idle and active currents - beating the competition by up to 75%, and PRISM GT’s receive mode current was also up to 35% lower than competitive solutions. These factors enable PRISM GT to consume significantly lower power than competitive solutions over a wide range of user activity. This spells longer battery life for users of notebook PC’s equipped with PRISM GT.

USB Functionality
