Adaptec Showcases End-to-End Storage, ISCSI Ecosystem Interoperability

10/24/2003 - Adaptec, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADPT), a global leader in storage solutions, will demonstrate end-to-end storage solutions - from chips and add-in cards with data protection to plug-and-play network storage arrays - and the interoperability of its IP storage area network (SAN) solutions in a storage ecosystem at Storage Networking World (SNW) next week.

The SNW Interoperability and Solutions Demonstration will show the compatibility of IP SAN solutions from Adaptec, Cisco Systems, EMC Corporation, Intel, NetApp, Spectra Logic and other leading providers of storage and networking products. The ecosystem will include Adaptec iSCSI host bus adapters and iSCSI-to-Serial ATA storage arrays for low-cost, easy-to-deploy storage area networks.

The joint demonstration will highlight how iSCSI leverages the Ethernet and the proven speed and reliability of SCSI to make it simple and affordable for organizations to deploy and manage storage area networks. iSCSI enables low-cost SANs for storage and business applications such as e-mail, database, video editing, backup, data protection, storage consolidation and disaster recovery.

Adaptec will also showcase interoperable end-to-end solutions that make it easy and cost-effective for organizations of all sizes to scale system performance, data protection and capacity to their expanding storage requirements. The solutions span direct-attached ASICs to plug-and-play solutions for storage area networks.

"Rapid data growth is increasing demand for solutions that enable businesses to seamlessly and cost-effectively scale storage to their needs," said Ahmet Houssein, vice president and general manager of Adaptec's Storage Solutions Group. "Adaptec's suite of interoperable end-to-end storage solutions make it significantly easier for organizations to deploy, configure and upgrade storage."

Adaptec's end-to-end solutions are anchored by a common hardware and software architecture that enables organizations to seamlessly migrate from direct-attached to networked storage across a broad range of technologies including Serial ATA, Serial Attached SCSI, iSCSI and Fibre Channel. The architecture gives organizations the flexibility to seamlessly move disk storage to upgraded RAID add-in cards, migrate direct-attached drives to networked storage and pool networked and direct-attached storage.

Adaptec - Making Storage Performance, Capacity, Data Protection Easy to Scale
Adaptec's end-to-end solutions include storage software that allows organizations to manage all Adaptec solutions under a single console and make networked storage as easy to manage as direct-attached storage, reducing total ownership costs. Adaptec will demonstrate the software and the following end-to-end solutions in booth G26 at SNW Fall 2003, October 27-30, in Orlando, Florida.

  • Adaptec HostRAID - Adaptec HostRAID software providing mirroring and striping for the Intel ICH5-R Southbridge and the Marvell Hercules 1 Serial ATA controller chips
  • Serial Attached SCSI chip - A prototype Adaptec Serial Attached SCSI chip architected to run at 3- and 6-gigabits/second for both first- and second-generation Serial Attached SCSI systems. The chip will support both Serial Attached SCSI and Serial ATA disk drives for storage of transactional and reference data in a single enclosure.
  • Serial ATA RAID controller - The new four-port Adaptec Serial ATA RAID controller combining advanced data protection with connectivity to Serial ATA disk drives for low cost-per-gigabyte storage of reference data such as electronic documents, presentations, email and graphics
  • IP storage networking solutions - Adaptec iSCSI adapters connecting a Microsoft Windows Exchange server, Computer Associates BrightStor ARCServe Backup server, and a Veritas Backup Exec server to two iSCSI storage targets in a low-cost, simple-to-deploy IP storage area network. The targets include:
    • Two 1-terabyte Adaptec iSA1500 iSCSI-to-Serial ATA storage arrays for cost-effective nearline applications such as remote backup, reference data and data protection.
    • One Spectra Logic 2K iSCSI tape library for tape backup. The Adaptec iSCSI HBA and Spectra Logic tape library enable storage area network-based backup solutions built on low-cost, simple-to-deploy IP storage networks.
