Tektronix Enhances MPEG Transport Stream Monitor with RF Monitoring

10/24/2003 - Tektronix, Inc. (NYSE:TEK), the world leader in MPEG-2 compressed digital video test and measurement equipment, announced several important new features for its popular MPEG transport stream monitor that enhance usability for broadcasters, network operators and system integrators.

Digital television broadcasters will win or lose the battle to secure viewers based on the quality and reliability of their service. Given the number of programs broadcast over digital transmission systems, broadcasters can no longer rely on monitoring methods using system operators watching a wall of video monitors. Progressing digital television technology is creating demand for monitoring systems that present a complete picture of the network and can detect signal degradation at both the RF and MPEG layers. Tektronix' proven MTM400 Transport Stream Monitor, a scalable solution that detects systems degradation, adds RF monitoring capability that enables operators to easily perform diagnostics and rapidly pinpoint where a fault has been introduced.

MPEG and RF Monitoring for Cable and Satellite Networks
The MTM400 is an MPEG transport stream monitor for broadcasters and network operators who need a scalable solution to detect signal degradation caused during transmission and distribution, preventing viewers from experiencing loss of signal. The addition of new QAM Annex B and C interfaces for the United States and Japanese cable markets, in addition to the existing QPSK and QAM Annex A interfaces for satellite and European cable customers, enable Tektronix to offer the most comprehensive support for operators. The new MTM400 RF monitoring capabilities add key measurements including MER, BER and RF constellation displays to the QAM and QPSK interfaces. The addition of cost effective RF monitoring functionality for the MTM400 enables broadcasters and network operators to deploy RF signal monitoring throughout their cable or satellite network where it previously has been too expensive.

Chinese and Japanese Multilanguage Support
For the Chinese and Japanese broadcast markets, Tektronix' MTM400 has added support for displaying and testing Chinese and Japanese character descriptors within the transport stream. Message logs can now be generated in either Chinese or Japanese so that problems can be immediately understood and preventative or corrective action taken by an operator whose native language is not English.

Usability Improvements Include Pie Chart Display
The busy operators of today's broadcast network control centers need a monitoring tool that is easy to learn and use. Tektronix has added a summary status view with pie chart display to the MTM400 user interface to act as a 'dashboard,' which can give an indication of the health and content of a transport stream. In addition, the MTM400 includes SNMP trap support to aid integration into third-party network management systems.

About the MTM400 MPEG and RF Transport Stream Monitor
The MTM400 is a one rack-unit high, extended confidence transport stream monitor that provides key measurements to ensure an entire network is error free. It provides high data rate, full TR101 290 monitoring of a single transport stream. When more in-depth analysis and/or recording capability is needed, diagnostic monitoring functionality can be added to the probe with additional software licenses.

The MTM400 uses Tektronix' WebMSM MPEG Measurement Manager, a software installable application that enables complete visibility of the error status of a transmission network from a standard Web browser via Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). The user is able to customize the user interface, building up geographical maps showing the location and status of the monitoring network, as well as mimic diagrams of the transmission network.
