10/22/2003 - NMS Communications (Nasdaq: NMSS), trusted supplier of communications products and services, has vastly simplified speech application development on NMS' telephony platforms through adoption of the Media Resource Control Protocol (MRCP), an emerging standard for managing speech recognition servers in a distributed system architecture. MRCP is rapidly being adopted by most major vendors in the speech industry.
MRCP manages client/server operation of the data stream between the input device (board) and the speech recognition host. As a result, Independent Software Vendors and application providers simply write to the MRCP interface, and do not need to address the differences between the speech recognition and telephony aspects of their application. For application providers who support multiple speech engines, for language availability, for example, writing separate audio providers for each vendor's speech engine will be a thing of the past. Applications can be written once and deployed with any speech engine that supports this standard. In addition, MRCP is compatible with other emerging technologies such as Voice over IP (VoIP), VoiceXML and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP).
"Standards like MRCP will further accelerate the adoption of speech recognition and text-to-speech technologies," said Steve Chambers, senior vice president and general manager of Network Speech Solutions at ScanSoft, Inc. (Nasdaq: SSFT), a leading supplier of speech and imaging solutions and co-author of the MRCP specification. "Thanks to the reliable, high performance implementation being offered by NMS, developers can now support this standard speech server interface on their telephony platforms, faster and easier than ever before."
Ted Bray, Director of Product Marketing at Edify Corporation applauds the adoption of this new industry standard by NMS. "Edify believes an open standards approach to development is critical to the growth of enterprise and network communications. With the company's adoption of MRCP, NMS is making a very strong commitment to the developer community, not simply to continue to produce outstanding products but, equally important, to give us greater flexibility and opportunity for innovation."
