Rural Cellular Enables Rural Mobile Communications with SEGway Devices

10/21/2003 - Performance Technologies (Nasdaq NM: PTIX), a leader in unified systems design for the communications, military and commercial markets, announced Rural Cellular Corporation is using the company’s SEGwayTM Link Replacement devices to enable lower-cost mobile communications in remote areas around the country.

Rural Cellular serves remote areas where tourism, agriculture and small businesses are prevalent. Because such areas are not densely populated, they often are not equipped with standard telecommunications infrastructure equipment. In an effort to install the necessary equipment in a cost-effective manner, Rural Cellular is using Performance Technologies’ SEGway Link Replacement devices to send SS7 messages – critical to mobile communications – over shared-use IP networks.

“Performance Technologies’ SEGway devices will help us to bring mobile communications to locations across the country where it would otherwise not be possible,” said Ann Newhall, chief operating officer of Rural Cellular. “The cost savings involved with using these devices will enable us to expand our business and improve the services we offer our customers.”

Performance Technologies’ SEGway SS7 over IP products reliably transport and route SS7 messages over lower-cost IP networks. The Internet Engineering Task Force Signaling Transport group’s (IETF SIGTRAN) Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) is utilized to ensure the messages are sent as reliably over IP networks as they are over the traditional public-switched telephone network (PSTN).

“Rural Cellular is a perfect example of a company who can truly benefit from our SEGway devices,” said Jason Lawlor, product manager for Performance Technologies. “These devices are extending the reach of mobile communications domestically and worldwide.”
