Fujitsu Rolls Out Eternus VT600 Storage in Japan, Asia Pacific

10/17/2003 - Fujitsu Siemens Computers announced that its shareholder Fujitsu Limited. will deliver the virtual tape system Eternus VT600 in Japan and Asia Pacific regions. It also announces that Fujitsu’s mainframe operating system, MSP, is also certified on CentricStor. This package consists of Fujitsu’s Lt160 tape library and CentricStor, a virtual tape appliance developed by Fujitsu Siemens Computers. Fujitsu will start the Eternus VT600 rollout to its Japanese MSP customer base in December 2003. The decision to use technology from the leading European computer company is a key step towards its goal of becoming a global market leader in nearline storage consolidation.

“After evaluating various virtual tape systems, we selected CentricStor because its quality and innovative architecture ensure outstanding performance and the broadest platform support in the industry,” said Hitoshi Matsushima, General Manager, Fujitsu Storage System Group. “Our customers now have the best solution to consolidate their nearline storage.”

“As a data protection appliance, CentricStor is based on unique virtualization technology. Our vision for CentricStor is to make sure our customers can choose freely among the most cost-effective storage systems while achieving a superior level of security for their data and efficiency of management within the enterprise information lifecycle,” added Dr. Helmut Beck, Vice President Storage at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. “We are enthusiastic about Fujitsu choosing CentricStor technology for its customers in Japan.”

CentricStor – well suited to consolidating the tape backup process
CentricStor, Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ virtual tape appliance, is an open storage solution employed for mainframes and open system environments running Unix and Windows. It employs virtual tape drives to provide all linked systems with a multitude of high-performance and permanently available backup and archiving resources across the storage area network. This universal connectivity enables different servers and applications to access the virtual archive simultaneously without needing a real tape drive for each individual system.

CentricStor integrates transparently into existing IT environments, making it unnecessary to modify existing application and backup scenarios. Since CentricStor replaces the direct link to the real storage peripherals, upgrading to the latest drive technology without affecting the host systems and applications poses no problems.
