10/16/2003 - Digi International (NASDAQ: DGII), the leader in Connectware, announced the launch of its new USB Plus Series – a complete line of powered USB solutions designed to simplify retail operations by allowing powered USB peripheral devices to be used with a standard, low-cost PC. Available in card and hub solutions, the new line of powered USB products includes the HubportTM/4+, HubportTM/PCI+ and Edgeport®/42+. The USB Plus Series saves space and simplifies system architecture by eliminating power supply bricks for USB devices.
“Many USB peripheral devices used in retail systems require individual power supply bricks, creating a space consuming mess of cables, bricks and power strips,” said Stephen Popovich, chief operating officer and corporate vice president of Inside Out Networks, the division of Digi International that manufactures the products. “Powered USB technology was developed to eliminate power supply bricks for USB devices like printers, bar-code scanners and signature capture devices. The new USB Plus Series utilizes this technology to enable merchandisers to easily and cost effectively transform a basic, small footprint PC into a high-performance retail system with powered USB device compatibility.”
Each solution offers four powered USB ports that are compatible with both standard USB and powered USB devices. The ports offer cable locking mechanisms to ensure a secure connection to peripheral devices. Hubport/4+ is an externally powered hub that connects to a standard USB port. Hubport/PCI+ is a card solution and is available in both internally powered and externally powered versions, allowing it to be used with virtually any PC, regardless of its available power. Hubport/PCI+ utilizes power balancing technology to provide maximum power to 12 volt and 24-volt peripherals without exhausting the PC’s five or 12-volt power. For added flexibility, Edgeport/42+ offers four powered USB and two RS-232 serial DB-9 ports, allowing the connection of powered USB, standard USB and legacy serial devices in a single box.
“The addition of the powered USB products to our extensive line of connectivity solutions extends our ability to help retail customers easily, and cost effectively, connect peripheral devices.” said Joseph Dunsmore, CEO, Digi International. “The retail industry is a strong target vertical market for Digi, and these new offerings simplify point-of-sale solutions with a unique combination of connectivity and power.”
