10/16/2003 - Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON), creator of the LonWorks® platform for connecting everyday devices, announced the availability of Internet enabled driver software — called OpenLDVTM — that allows manufacturers to create management and application software that accesses LonWorks devices through Echelon interfaces such as the i.LON® 10 Ethernet Adapter and i.LON 100 Internet Server products.
"Our goal in releasing this software is to expand the LonWorks market to include software vendors with legacy HMI and enterprise applications," said Michael R. Tennefoss, Echelon's vice president of marketing. "Before the OpenLDV driver, legacy applications couldn't establish high performance connections through the Internet to everyday devices. That changes with the availability of the OpenLDV driver, which opens the market for access, monitoring, and control software to a wide range of suppliers and adds breadth to the range of available LonWorks solutions. We are particularly excited about the added value of the OpenLDV driver in combination with the new i.LON® 10 Ethernet Adapter with both Ethernet and PPP modem support, and expect that the combination will expand the market for open, interoperable LonWorks systems."
The OpenLDV driver provides interfaces that are designed to be easily configurable for simple deployments, yet scalable for large remote access networks. When used in conjunction with the i.LON 10 and i.LON 100, the new driver software provides outstanding security including RC4 encryption, MD5 authentication, and protection from replay attacks, as well as transparent, fault tolerant session recovery when the IP connection or power is interrupted. Support is provided for uplink connections, wherein a remote network initiates a call, either dial-up or broadband, into a service center. Uplink connections are commonly used in large remote access systems in which hundreds or thousands of sites report back to a single service center.
According to Damian Inglin, Echelon product marketing manager for management tools, "The OpenLDV driver software addresses an untapped market by allowing legacy applications to work with the low-cost i.LON family and other Echelon adapters. Software providers can extend the reach of their applications using Echelon's adapters and servers, benefiting OEM product manufacturers, network integrators and end-users alike."
The OpenLDV driver software will be provided royalty-free when used with any of Echelon's network interface products including the i.LON 10, i.LON 100, PCC-10, PCLTA-20, SLTA-10, and the initial release will be available in Q4 2003. Additional information about the OpenLDV driver software is available at the LonWorld® 2003 Exhibition in Munich, October 15-16th 2003 and at Echelon's Web site, found at www.echelon.com.
