TIBCO Software Reduces Infrastructure Costs for Lufthansa Cargo

10/16/2003 - TIBCO Software Inc. (NASDAQ:TIBX), a leading enabler of real-time business and the world’s largest independent business integration software company, as demonstrated by market share and analyst reports, announced that the German national airline’s freight subsidiary, Lufthansa Cargo AG, has selected TIBCO’s integration platform for FOReSIGHT, its three-year project encompassing the reorganization and modernization of its IT architecture. TIBCO is supplying key application and business process integration solutions to the FOReSIGHT project, which started in early 2003 and will be completed in 2006. With this project Lufthansa Cargo achieves significant process improvements.

“With the FOReSIGHT project, we’re making our business processes and IT systems fit for the future,” said Ricardo Diaz-Rohr, CIO at Lufthansa Cargo. “Our goal is to save 35 million euros per year with real-time integration and optimization of our core order management process, which comprises order entry, ground handling and revenue accounting. In addition, we estimate that optimizing revenue management should help us increase our corporate profits by 5 million euros between now and project completion.”

Lufthansa Cargo’s IT infrastructure has grown over the years, but its heterogeneous systems have made it complex. The FOReSIGHT project includes 40 sub-projects and is designed to cut costs by reducing this complexity. In addition, the new infrastructure will facilitate a faster time-to-market for new Lufthansa Cargo products and services. “The new software will also reduce development risk and costs, and will help us integrate customers’ and partners’ systems more easily,” said Kamilla Strass, Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) Project Manager at Lufthansa Cargo. “And in the future we will be able to reduce performance bottlenecks. Optimizing certain processes, like order entry, and making them easier to perform, will speed them up and simplify the accounting processes.”

Lufthansa Cargo is planning to extend existing applications by integrating them with new, custom-developed solutions as well as packaged software applications. The new EAI structure, more seamless and easier to maintain, is based on the TIBCO backbone and the applications connected to it. TIBCO’s integration platform will support the migration of legacy systems and provide more flexibility for the integration of customers’ and partners’ systems. In addition, Lufthansa Cargo will realize significant cost savings by minimizing the development of interfaces between applications. The company now uses TIBCO’s common data model that stores business objects as an XML map, as well as other components such as workflow modules and adapters for SAP, Siebel and legacy applications. At least 100 interfaces will be replaced by the TIBCO solution within the next year.

“An enterprise’s key processes have a direct influence on quality, efficiency, and costs,” said Erik Hansen, President EMEA of TIBCO. “Our software optimizes these processes at Lufthansa Cargo helping it to maintain the leadership position as one of the most successful freight airlines.”
