AEP Systems Emerges as SSL Player by Targeting Smaller Networks

10/15/2003 - In a report published this month by Frost & Sullivan, the international analyst firm identifies AEP Systems as an emerging player in the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) VPN market. According to Frost & Sullivan almost all of the SSL VPN players are currently focused on the large enterprise marketplace. AEP Systems is an exception to this trend by targeting the lower end of the market; a strategy Frost & Sullivan expects will pay off.

"AEP Systems has bucked the trend set by the majority of the market to carve out a niche for themselves early. AEP targets the SMB (small and medium-sized business) space at a time when the rest of the market is targeting the large enterprise space. AEP offers simple solutions at the lowest prices to become channel friendly and to specifically target smaller networks," said Jason Wright, Senior Analyst at Frost & Sullivan.

Wright compares AEP Systems to SonicWALL in the firewall/IPSec VPN space. SonicWALL initially targeted the lower end of the market when the rest of the firewall/IPSec VPN players were targeting the large enterprise space. As the high end of the market became saturated and moved down the spectrum to the SMB/SOHO space, SonicWALL was uniquely positioned to capitalize on the wave of new SMB/SOHO business.

Wright predicts that AEP Systems' market share will grow marginally in 2004, while the company advances its stability and product offering. "However, in 2005, as the market's focus expands down the spectrum, AEP will be uniquely positioned to capitalize on that trend, just as SonicWALL was," said Wright.

In the report Frost & Sullivan asserts that the SSL VPN market is advancing from its introductory phase to its growth phase. According to Wright, the market is driven primarily by the remote access needs of organizations with Web-enabled applications, as well as the undeniably more simple clientless characteristics of SSL VPNs when compared to IPSec VPNs. The firm predicts the market will grow exponentially with a 361.6 percent growth rate in 2003, resulting in a market size of $89.7 million.
