U.S. Bureau of Customs Certifies Microchip Technology for C-TPAT

10/15/2003 - Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors, announced that it has been granted the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) certification from the U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection. Effective immediately, this certification will enable Microchip to continue its excellent product delivery times to customers by streamlining the increasingly stringent domestic-import procedures mandated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security following the 9/11 tragedy.

In order to achieve C-TPAT certification, Microchip evidenced compliance with standards through an exhaustive gap analysis of security in its supply chain. By becoming certified, Microchip has helped eliminate any potential shipping delays to its customers that could result from heightened U.S.-import standards following 9/11, while ensuring strong levels of security. C-TPAT is the first worldwide supply chain security initiative, which was developed by U.S. Customs in the wake of 9/11 in order to develop, enhance, and maintain effective security processes throughout the global supply chain.

"The measures that this C-TPAT certification requires, Microchip Technology had addressed some time ago," said Tom Cochran, Manager of Physical Distribution at Microchip Technology. "U.S. Customs has affirmed the effectiveness of our security measures, further strengthening our ability to continue delivering our leading semiconductor products in the dependable, just-in-time manner our customers have come to expect."

Though many semiconductor companies have not yet undertaken the C-TPAT certification process, global distribution experts expect that this standard may soon become mandatory in order for companies to maintain or gain U.S. importing privileges. As a global leader in the semiconductor industry, Microchip undertook the C-TPAT certification to validate its exacting standards for security, and maintain just-in-time delivery cycles to its OEM and distributor customers.
