Microchip Unveils Dual CMOS Low-dropout Regulator with Reset Monitor

10/10/2003 - Microchip Technology Inc, (Nasdaq: MCHP), a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors, announced a dual CMOS low-dropout regulator (LDO) with an optional microcontroller reset function. Applications for the TC1301A/B and TC1302A/B include: cell phones, PDAs, Wireless LAN (local area network), portable computing and communication applications where noise, space, long battery life, time to market and cost are key elements to the design.

The TC1301A/B integrates two LDOs – 150 milliamp & 300 milliamp — and a microcontroller reset function and the TC1302A/B integrates two LDOs. By combining these parts into one device the TC1301A/B and TC1302A/B require fewer passive and discrete components, which reduces the amount of board real estate and lowers the overall project cost.

“These LDOs have a similar pinout to Microchip’s TC1300 with the exception of an additional voltage-out pin,” said Bryan Inawat, senior product marketing engineer for Microchip’s Analog and Interface Products Division. “Our focus is our customers and their design needs. Now, they will be able to integrate this new device with the same quality and performance as the TC1300 without any major redesigns, which will help shorten product development time and ultimately save them money.”

Additional features for the TC1301 A/B and TC1302A/B include an over current limit and over temperature protection. In addition, the device features low crosstalk between the voltage output channels, meaning less noise coupling.

The dropout voltage for these devices is as low as 104millivolts at 300 milliamps; the supply current is as low as 103mA. The TC1301A/B and TC1302A/B are available in a small 3X3 DFN package that has better power dissipation characteristics at a smaller footprint compared with other packages such as SOIC-8, SOP-8, MSOP-8.

Pricing for the TC1301A/B in 1,000-unit quantities is $1.10 for 8-pin MSOP or $1.15 DFN package. Pricing for the TC1302A/B in 1,000-unit quantities is $1.05 for 8-pin MSOP or $1.10 DFN package. Samples and volume quantities are now available. For more information, contact any Microchip sales representative or authorized worldwide distributor.
