10/7/2003 - Marimba, Inc. (Nasdaq: MRBA), the Software Change Management Company, announced a new Software Usage Solution that enables companies to track software usage throughout their enterprise. Marimba's Software Usage Solution allows IT organizations to identify and collect detailed information on software applications installed throughout their enterprise, and to take action with that information to help ensure license compliance and avoid overspending for unnecessary software licenses, maintenance, and support.
"All organizations must be concerned with maximizing the value of their software assets," said Jane Disbrow, research director at Gartner. "This includes ensuring that the organization is properly licensed for the software it is using, while not paying for shelfware (unused software). Software has become a significant cost for most organizations and requires the trained personnel and the software tools to manage such assets."
Marimba's Software Usage Solution leverages Marimba's extensive inventory capabilities to identify the software assets in a company's distributed enterprise. By enabling IT administrators to create specific policies, companies will be able to dictate when applications should be installed, uninstalled, or re-targeted to other users. Combined with Marimba's flagship Desktop/Mobile Management offerings, the Software Usage Solution can be used for updating applications in need of repair, OS migration projects, server consolidation, and other software change management processes.
Customers have used Marimba's tested and proven inventory capabilities to identify software assets as part of an overall software change management process. The Software Usage Solution provides enhancements to these capabilities that help customers ensure license compliance and save money on software maintenance and support costs.
"Tracking software licenses across our IT endpoints in the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, and the United Kingdom is a huge undertaking that has been dramatically simplified with Marimba's software management offerings," said Simon Bullers, global platform manager, Windows Systems, at Barclays Global Investors. "Once we've identified where and how our applications are being used, Marimba enables us to harvest unused software licenses, and deploy them to other users - which helps us get the most out of our IT investments, and ensures that our people have the technology they need to do their jobs."
Industry analysts at Gartner, Inc. estimate that software audits will increase by 20 percent or more by the year 2005 (0.7 probability)*, as software companies seek to minimize lost revenue associated with customers deploying more software licenses beyond what they purchased. In today's distributed computing environment, numerous scenarios exist that may cause unintended compliance issues for companies such as decentralized purchasing of software, employees changing jobs within the same company, or improperly defined asset management policies. Marimba's Software Usage Solution allows companies to identify the location of software assets, and understand how they're being utilized.
"Companies that fail to track their software usage may face a variety of unplanned, unbudgeted expenses, that range from violating software license agreements to addressing the risks that come from employees using unsanctioned file-sharing applications in the workplace," said Kia Behnia, chief technology officer for Marimba. "With the release of the Software Usage Solution, Marimba provides the technology and best practices necessary to help companies establish and maintain software license compliance throughout their enterprise."
