Cypress Delivers Video Over USB with Streaming Reference Design Kit

10/2/2003 - Cypress Semiconductor (NYSE:CY), the market share leader in USB, unveiled a new, high-performance reference design kit targeting streaming video and isochronous USB applications. Cypress also announced plans to introduce an enhanced version of the kit compatible with the Video Device Class Specification released this month by the USB Implementers’ Forum.

The new CYStream kit, designed to be used in conjunction with Cypress’s EZ-USBTM FX2 USB 2.0 integrated microcontroller, provides a reference platform that demonstrates the devices’ ability to stream data through high-bandwidth isochronous and bulk end-points. The kit delivers 24MBytes/second of throughput and includes the following items:

The device extends the plug-and-play simplicity of USB to more complex, bandwidth-hungry applications, including USB-enabled TV tuners, personal video recorders and video compression devices.

"Video and audio applications that require continuous data flow without interruption use streaming to transfer data, but the designs are typically very challenging," said Cedric Van Rossum, product manager for Cypress’s EZ-USB devices. "CYStream, when combined with Cypress’s EZ-USB FX2TM, simplifies this process and is an important ‘first step’ toward bringing video-over-USB to the PC."

The CYStream reference design kit (CY4603) is available for download from Cypress’s web site at no cost. The enhanced version of the kit will be made available this Fall. For more information, visit Cypress online at

About EZ-USB FX2
EZ-USB FX2 (CY7C68013), designed into CYStream, is the world’s first USB 2.0 integrated microcontroller. It is an extremely flexible, yet cost-effective single-chip solution whose high integration provides superior time-to-market advantages. The device integrates an 8051 processor, a "smart" serial interface engine (SIE), a USB 2.0 transceiver, on-chip RAM and FIFOs, and a general programmable interface. The SIE in FX2 handles all basic USB functions, freeing the embedded MCU for application-specific functions and ensuring sustained high-performance transfer rates. The FX2's general programmable interface (GPIF) allows it to seamlessly connect to any ASIC or DSP while supporting all common bus standards, including ATA, UTOPIA, EPP and PCMCIA. EZ-USB FX2 is fully USB 2.0 compliant and is available in 56-pin SSOP, 56-QFN, 100- and 128-pin TQFP packages.
