JNI Announces MPI Software Technology’s Support of MPI/Pro on Infinistar HCAs for High Performance Cluster Computing

1/30/2003 - JNI® Corporation (NasdaqNM:JNIC) announced that MPI Software Technology Inc. (MSTI), the leading provider of middleware products for high-performance computing (HPC) environments, will support MPI/Pro®, its Message Passing Interface (MPI) software, on JNI’s InfiniStar dual-port 10 gigabit per second (Gb/sec) PCI-X to InfiniBand host channel adapter (HCA) modules. With MPI/Pro, JNI’s HCAs deliver up to three times the bandwidth of proprietary interconnects used in Linux-based HPC server cluster environments, and up to eight times the bandwidth of gigabit Ethernet. JNI’s InfiniStar line of HCAs will be featured in demos at the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo, January 22-24 in New York, NY (JNI Booth #410).

“As the leading supplier of InfiniBand HCAs, JNI is committed to providing InfiniBand technology for use in several market segments, particularly the enterprise database and HPC markets,” said Shaun Walsh, Vice President of IOS Business Development for JNI Corporation. “By porting its MPI/Pro software to our InfiniBand HCAs, MSTI gives us the ability to offer significant bandwidth advantages to Linux-based HPC server cluster environments, an important early adopter market for InfiniBand technology.”

“MSTI is pleased to support JNI’s InfiniBand HCAs,” said Dr. Anthony Skjellum, CTO of MSTI. “Working closely with an InfiniBand leader such as JNI provides us with an opportunity to expand the market for MPI/Pro as the technology becomes established as a high-performance interconnect for HPC clusters.”

Benefits of InfiniBand
InfiniBand is an open standard supported by more than 100 leading companies via the IBTA (InfiniBand Trade Association). An important feature of InfiniBand is the ability to implement Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) technology. RDMA allows server-to-server and server-to-storage data transfers to occur with minimal interruptions to the host system. InfiniBand’s high performance and low latency has made it the choice of major OEM systems providers for next-generation servers. All InfiniBand HCA modules support RDMA in hardware, so server networks are no longer constrained by I/O processing overhead and bandwidth limitations. As a result, high performance server networks that use dense, low-cost rack systems and blades have become attractive alternatives for many applications.

About MPI/Pro
MPI/Pro provides high-performance message passing middleware for parallel computing supporting InfiniBand. The software improves performance of clusters running applications such as CFD simulation, weather modeling, financial modeling, seismic exploration, and protein folding. MPI/Pro for InfiniBand delivers supercomputing performance, robustness, and standards compliance. MPI/Pro currently supports the MPI-1.2 standard.

About the IBX-4x02m-C
JNI’s IBX-4x02m HCA module is a dual port PCI-X-to-InfiniBand channel adapter based on second-generation InfiniHost MT23108 silicon from Mellanox Technologies. It is capable of delivering performance of up to 20 Gb/sec, and can achieve the maximum throughput available in today’s x86 servers by using high performance 64-bit/133 MHz PCI-X bus slots. Each new InfiniStar HCA module supports the high bandwidth, low latency computing performance necessary to launch the next generation of database, storage clustering, and server clustering applications. The IBX-4x02m HCA module operates at InfiniBand 4x speeds, four times the performance of first-generation InfiniBand HCA modules.
