1/29/2003 - QNX Software Systems announced that the next release of the QNX® Momentics® development suite will provide Eclipse Platform 2.0 support, allowing embedded developers to simplify the entire development cycle through better tools integration, performance, and ease of use. By adding Eclipse 2.0 support, QNX is ensuring that QNX Momentics users can take full advantage of the Eclipse platform, including third-party development work contributed by the Eclipse community and a host of Eclipse-supported tools.
Eclipse is an open platform for tools integration that provides a framework for streamlining application development. With its Eclipse support, QNX Momentics not only provides a powerful environment for developing applications based on the QNX Neutrino® RTOS, but also allows developers to seamlessly integrate development tools from other Eclipse-supporting vendors. By incorporating support for Eclipse 2.0, QNX Momentics brings all the added community-developed functionality of the new platform, including broader international language support, tighter integration of third-party tools, faster incremental compiling, and faster start-up times.
"For more than 20 years, QNX's OS technology has been the driving force behind generations of innovative, yet extremely reliable, embedded systems," said Dave Curley, QNX vice president of marketing. "Building this support for the latest release of Eclipse ensures that QNX's customers and partners have a full-featured, well-integrated development environment as well as the most reliable operating system at the core of their products."
With Eclipse 2.0 support, Momentics will allow for:
Eclipse 2.0 support makes it simpler for QNX Momentics tools to coexist with independently produced tools. The Eclipse 2.0 platform redefines the plug-in integration frameworks to ensure that interoperability issues do not arise.
Momentics leverages Eclipse 2.0's improved time to start up and load development tools, two items contributed by the Eclipse development community.
Improved Ease of Use
Eclipse 2.0 adds to the library of shortcuts and automated processes, allowing QNX Momentics users to complete basic development tasks faster and freeing them to focus on higher-level design and programming issues.
"Eclipse 2.0 provides building blocks and a foundation for constructing and running integrated software development tools," said Skip McGaughey, chairperson of the Eclipse Board of Stewards. "QNX Momentics, combined with Eclipse 2.0 support, adds to the power of this movement and the platform itself by giving Eclipse users access to a greater pool of host platforms, targets, and processors that are critical for embedded development."
The QNX Momentics development suite version 6.2.1, including the latest version of the QNX Neutrino RTOS, will be commercially available in February 2003.
