American Arium Delivers Linux Kernel Debug

1/29/2003 - American Arium, an industry leader in software debug and integration tool development, delivered a Linux® source-level kernel debug solution using its SourcePointTM debugging software along with an Arium SC-1000 JTAG emulator for ARM and Intel® XScaleTM processors.

Targeted at embedded Linux developers, Ariumís solution addresses the large scope of source-level kernel debug by presenting it through an easy-to-use, easy-to-understand interface. Ariumís debug solution leverages the real-time execution trace of ARM and XScale by allowing the user to cross-reference trace information back to original source code.

"One of the most compelling features of this solution is the ability for the user to debug his Linux kernel itself at source level," said Todd Selbo, product marketing manager at American Arium. "There is immense value to driver and kernel developers to see their source code execute on a line-by-line basis and see inside processor functions."

This solution provides developers with the ability to perform hardware-assisted debugging for bringing up new hardware, while also providing source-level debugging capabilities for the Linux kernel and associated device drivers. Ariumís SourcePoint debugging interface provides developers with the ability to download code to their target system, program Altera PLD devices and execute board initialization from one convenient interface.

"Our SourcePoint interface gives the user all the tools he needs in one simple-to-use software package," said Larry Traylor, CEO, American Arium. "With tight integration, our software and emulators let the user focus on solving his coding problems without worrying about connectivity between his debugger and his JTAG interface."

The American Arium solution was demonstrated on its REF-XA4 reference board, using an Altera® ExcaliburTM EPXA4 device with an integrated ARM922T processor and 400K gate programmable logic device. This reference board incorporates serial, Ethernet, and USB connectivity; up to 512 MB SDRAM; 8 MB flash ROM; and multiple test input facilities.
