Voice-enabled Cable Modems Using TI's Silicon and Software Receive CableLabs(R) PacketCable 1.0 Certification

1/28/2003 - A major step toward delivering Internet Protocol (IP) voice services over cable was made with the availability of Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) PacketCableTM voice-enabled design platform. Multiple customers using TI´s new hardware and software platform have achieved PacketCable certification by Cable Television Laboratories, Inc. (CableLabs).

Two leading cable modem manufacturers, Arris and Toshiba, received PacketCable 1.0 certification in Certification Wave 24 with modems based on TI´s silicon and software platform. This Voice over Cable solution includes TI´s implementation of the data over cable service interface specification (DOCSISTM) and PacketCable 1.0 specification, which includes TI´s Telogy SoftwareTM, the industry´s leading Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) software. The PacketCable specification will enable cable operators to expand their suite of offerings by delivering voice services efficiently and cost effectively over cable networks, as well as ensure product interoperability. The PacketCable certification extends TI´s growing list of industry contributions and achievements.

"This PacketCable certification achieved by TI, Arris and Toshiba is an important milestone for the cable industry," said Steve Craddock, senior VP for new media development at Comcast. "We appreciate the tremendous effort and commitment required to achieve this and look forward to extending the benefits of this to the consumer."

With the most comprehensive range of features to enable customers to quickly develop and deploy their networking equipment, TI offers solutions for CPE gateways, carrier-class gateways, voice over cable, voice over DSL and enterprise IP phones.

"Arris and TI set a goal early on to deliver PacketCable certified modems and we are happy to announce that we have achieved this goal," said Bruce McClelland, vice president of engineering at Arris. "TI's strength in DOCSIS, PacketCable and voice software, combined with Arris expertise in cable telephony and the PacketCable specifications were the key factors in this success."

"We are proud to offer our customers a long line of industry achievements," said Brett Butler, general manager of TI's cable broadband communications group. "With the success of our customers in DOCSIS 2.0 certification and now PacketCable certification, we continue to demonstrate the combined technology leadership of TI's cable modem technology and its Telogy Software."
