IDT Introduces Industry's First Monolithic, 9-Mbit Synchronous Dual-Port Family

1/28/2003 - IDTTM (Integrated Device Technology, Inc.; Nasdaq: IDTI), a leading communications IC company, underscored its leadership position in multi-port technology with the introduction of the industry’s first 9-Mbit, monolithic, synchronous dual-port products. Unlike competing devices, these products operate at speeds up to 200 MHz, making them the fastest in the industry. These products also include a unique set of features that ensures maximum flexibility and performance, making them suitable for mobile wireless and core/metro infrastructure markets.

The devices’ single-die design offers customers maximum functionality with no limitations on performance. By contrast, competitive devices offering 9-Mbit of true dual-port storage rely on multiple die within the package, resulting in a restriction on performance and a loss of the address counter functions. In addition, the new IDT family is pin-compatible with the company’s existing x36 and x18 synchronous dual-port devices, enabling an easy upgrade with minimal board changes.

Expanding on the functionality found in the company’s existing products, the IDT synchronous dual-port devices are the first dual-port products to include collision detection and sleep mode features, representing a significant advancement compared to current synchronous multi-port devices. Collision detection allows the device to conduct an address comparison and report a collision between both ports. This feature reduces the need for separate off-chip arbitration circuits, thereby allowing designers to use fewer components and optimize board space, lowering design complexity. The new sleep mode feature enables the device to minimize power consumption, even when the port is at TTL level inputs, by limiting the port’s power consumption to full standby levels. Other features include the addition of synchronous interrupts, a feature that provides a “software” tool for inter-port communication.

“IDT is committed to maintaining its position as the leader in multi-port technology by continuing to leverage its expertise to develop technology that offers best-in-class performance combined with innovative features and functionality,” said Bill Beane, strategic marketing manager for the IDT multi-port products division. “Introducing the industry’s first single-die, synchronous, 9-Mbit true dual-port family expands our range of offerings, allowing us to better meet the complex design needs of our customers targeting applications such as switches, routers and base transceiver stations.”

Pricing and Availability
10,000-quantity, 133 MHz pricing will range from $47.31 for a 2-Mbit device to $79.95 for a 9-Mbit device. The 256Kx36 is currently sampling with production quantities available in Q2CY03. The remainder of the family will be available for sampling in Q2CY03 with production quantities beginning in Q3CY03. Devices are available in both BGA (BC, BF) and PQFP (DD, DR) packages.
