Xilinx and International Rectifier Deliver High Performance Solution for Motor Control

1/22/2003 - Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX) and International Rectifier (NYSE: IRF), the world leader in power management technology, announced the immediate availability of the Accelerator motor control design platform, based on the low-cost Xilinx® Spartan-IIETM FPGA and International Rectifier Motion Control Mixed Signal Chipset. The Accelerator platform provides motor designers a low-cost, reconfigurable signal processing architecture using parallel processing and soft peripherals that achieves unmatched motor control performance with feedback control loop bandwidth up to 5 kHz. For additional details, visit the Xilinx eSP web portal at www.xilinx.com/esp/accelerator or http://accelerator.irf.com. International Rectifier will demonstrate the Accelerator board at the upcoming APEC conference, February 9-13, 2003 in Miami, Florida.

By providing both the high bandwidth needed for torque control and the flexibility for many types of motion peripherals, the Accelerator platform is also ideal for automotive drive train controls, automated assembly, precision material handling and more.

"We are very excited to be working with Xilinx, the industry leader in high-performance, reprogrammable digital signal processing chips," said David Tam, vice president of Applications Engineering and Systems Architecture at International Rectifier. "The Spartan-IIE FPGA provides us with the high-performance flexible DSP functions needed to deliver a solution that meets the needs of motor control designers."

"The Accelerator platform solution is a prime example of Xilinx' expansion into the industrial automation market," said Robert Bielby, senior director of Strategic Solutions at Xilinx. "The introduction of this hardware design platform will serve as a catalyst that addresses the need for DSP functionality across a wide range industrial type applications."

Price and Availability
The Accelerator design platform is available now. Pricing for the development system is $9,500/unit. The part number is IRACS201, which includes all hardware for a 1.5-kilowatt servo amp, pre-loaded code into a Xilinx XC18V02 EEPROM targeted for the Spartan IIE-300, and ServoDesigner, Windows-based configuration software. The actual object code (EXO format) and source code (Verilog) are licensed separately from International Rectifier.
