Mentor Graphics and UMC Strengthen Partnership with the Development of 0.18 Micron Mixed-Signal Design Kits

1/21/2003 - Mentor Graphics Corporation (Nasdaq: MENT) announced the availability of design kits for UMC's (NYSE: UMC) 0.18um analog/mixed-signal (AMS) process technologies. These qualified, open-source design kits enable IC design companies to rapidly set up their design environments and immediately focus on mixed-signal design and verification using UMC's leading-edge technologies.

The 0.18um mixed-signal design kits include UMC-supported EldoTM simulation models, Calibre® DRC, LVS and extraction technology files, schematic symbols, process definition files, and all other configuration files necessary to effectively utilize the Mentor Graphics® complete AMS system-on-chip (SoC) design flow.

"Setting up a mixed-signal design environment is time- and labor-intensive, and Mentor is committed to offering customers an alternative which will give dramatic cost and time savings," said Jue-Hsien Chern, vice president and general manager, Deep Submicron (DSM) division, Mentor Graphics. "The Mentor/UMC design kits are a fundamental part of Mentor's ongoing commitment to providing the most comprehensive, AMS SoC design and verification flow available today."

"UMC is committed to supporting mixed-signal SoC designers by providing complete IC design kits for our deep submicron process technologies," stated Ken Liou, division director of Design Support at UMC. "Our ongoing partnership with Mentor Graphics continues to flourish, as we share increasing strategic focus on enabling the development of high-performance, mixed-signal SoC designs. We value Mentor's earned reputation as a leader in customer support, coupled with Mentor's historically strong position in mixed-signal design innovation."

Customer-Proven Technology
"We've been very impressed with the comprehensive design kits developed by Mentor and UMC," commented Rami Ahola, design team manager, Spirea AB. "Our most recent success, TripleTraC, is the first multi-standard transceiver combining 802.11b, 802.11g and full band 802.11a on a single chip. We used the 0.18um design kit from Mentor and UMC in conjunction with the entire Mentor AMS tool flow, and achieved silicon success on the first pass, which was no small feat considering the TripleTrac's complex nature, low power consumption and high frequencies."

The 0.18um mixed-signal design kits have been qualified by both UMC and Mentor and are available immediately. They are also slated to be available to customers through IP Master, UMC's online design resource & support center at in mid-February. RF kits will be available later this quarter. Kits for 0.13um logic are also available now from Mentor, and mixed-signal and RF kits for 0.13um and 90 nanometer processes are currently in development.
