1/16/2003 - TimesTen, Inc. announced the general availability of the TimesTen® Real-Time Event Processing System on the MontaVistaTM Linux® Carrier Grade Edition, an operating system and development environment for Intel processors. This offering is in response to significant customer adoption of the companies' products within network equipment providers (NEPs).
Leading NEPs and telecom operators are increasingly choosing Modular Communications Platforms upon which to develop new networking products and deploy leading-edge services. This modular approach employs the use of components from vendors of standards-based off-the-shelf hardware and software building blocks as an alternative to a single vendor, proprietary platform approach. This open architecture foundation allows NEPs to lower operating and capital costs, provides an open platform with a choice of vendors, promotes platform reuse, improves time-to-market, and allows for load-handling headroom. A carrier-grade Linux operating system like MontaVista Software's, infrastructure software products such as TimesTen's, and high-performance processors from Intel have been identified by service providers and NEPs as key building blocks for their Modular Communications Platforms.
"The communications industry needs standards-based platforms that feature off-the-shelf, carrier grade platforms and infrastructure software to enable lower cost and more flexible solutions," said Ron Peck, director of Communications Platforms for Intel Corporation. "TimesTen's commitment to support Modular Communications Platforms adds valuable breadth to the choice of ecosystem vendors available to system developers."
TimesTen Supports MontaVista Carrier Grade Linux
TimesTen's latest product release, version 4.5.21, adds support for MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition on Intel x86 processors. The Carrier Grade Edition is based on award-winning MontaVista Linux and is designed specifically for the demanding applications deployed in telecommunications, data communications and other industries that require extremely high levels of service availability. MontaVista Software and Intel also participate in the Carrier Grade Linux Working Group of the Open Source Development Lab (OSDL), working with other industry leaders to identify and accelerate the development of Linux features for carrier grade applications.
"Network equipment providers no longer need to develop most of their software infrastructure in order to achieve the performance and reliability required for telecom applications," said Sheila Baker, vice president, Marketing, MontaVista Software. "We share TimesTen's dedication to providing carrier-grade infrastructure software that enables system providers to focus on value-added applications."
