Agilent Technologies introduces enhancement-mode PHEMT RFIC for 5 to 6 GHz wireless terminals and LAN access points

1/16/2003 - Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) introduced an E-pHEMT (enhancement-mode pseudomorphic high-electron-mobility transistor) medium-power amplifier RFIC (radio-frequency integrated circuit) for 5 to 6 GHz wireless LAN access points (APs), network interface cards (NICs) and fixed wireless applications. It is designed to reduce board space and satisfy the demand for compact wireless equipment that consumes the lowest possible power.

The Agilent MGA-545P8 is the industry's lowest current medium-power amplifier and is based on Agilent's 0.5-micron gate length E-pHEMT process. It operates at a very low current of 92 mA at 3.3V, providing a saturated output power of +22 dBm with very high power-added efficiency at 46 percent. This makes it an excellent choice as a power amplifier for 5 to 6 GHz broadband fixed wireless access applications that employ a constant envelope modulation scheme.

When used as a linear power amplifier, the Agilent MGA-545P8 provides +16 dBm linear output power for an error vector magnitude of 5.6 percent at a data rate of 54 Mb/s. This makes it ideal for use as a power amplifier in APs and NICs for 802.11a networks in the 5.8 GHz UNII (unlicensed national information infrastructure) band in the United States and networks operating under the 5 GHz HiperLAN/2 (high performance radio local area network) in Europe.

With the broadband P1dB performance above +20dBm across 1 to 6 GHz, the MGA-545P8 can be used as a driver amplifier, power amplifier and buffer amplifier for base station radio cards, 2.4GHz ISM band, Wireless Local Loop, C-band VSAT and microwave links.

The MGA-545P8 E-pHEMT RFIC is housed in the compact 2.0 mm x 2.0 mm x 0.75 mm 8-pad industry-standard leadless plastic chip carrier JEDEC DRP-N LPCC (JEDEC Solid State Technology Association) package. The package's lead-free backside metalization provides excellent thermal dissipation as well as visual evidence of solder reflow.
