Equator Unveils Industry’s First Multi-Format, High-Definition DVD Player Reference Design at CES 2003

1/13/2003 - Equator Technologies, Inc., a provider of high-performance, programmable and power-efficient system-on-a-chip (SoC) processors for video streaming and image processing applications, announced the introduction and availability of the industry’s first multi-format, high-definition DVD player reference design based on Internet-ready, consumer devices capable of supporting all popular film, Internet and DVD video formats, resulting in the industry’s most versatile platform for product differentiation, and unmatched price/performance for OEMs and consumers alike.

“We built our chip to do just this – to bring the latest advancement in video processing technology to the market in the shortest time and to enable OEMs to deliver the most innovative products,” said John O’Donnell, co-founder and CTO of Equator Technologies. “We are thrilled to team up with Microsoft to be the first platform to take the Windows Media Video 9 to the exciting world of DVD players. It’s great to see OEM devices on the CES show floor based on our solution, only months after the first introduction of Windows Media 9 Series.”

“We are excited to see Windows Media Video 9 innovations in video quality being tapped by the new Equator DVD reference design,” said Dave Fester, general manager of the Windows Digital Media Division for Microsoft. “This scores an industry first by delivering high-definition video quality via Windows Media Video 9 with the existing red-laser DVD technology, and brings the world of Windows Media content to the living room. The Equator BSP-15 is an ideal platform for taking Windows Media 9 Series into new scenarios for the living room with a wide variety of consumer video applications on devices.”

The Equator reference design enables hardware and software to allow OEMs to deploy a range of Internet-connected, multi-function, multi-format DVD player devices in the shortest possible time. To be featured at CES is a reference design that provides unmatched video performance and flexibility, offering OEMs a unique opportunity for maximum product differentiation and low product cost.

Feature highlights include:

Broadband Enabled – The reference design provides a broadband connection for streaming media to be downloaded and played back on the TV. A browser interface is provided for users to navigate the Internet for media access. Windows Media Video 9 DVD Playback in the Living Room – In addition to supporting standard DVD playback, the Equator reference design also allows playback of any Windows Media Video 9 content, from the Internet or from the user’s own home video collection on both DVD and CD media.

Windows Media Video 9 HD-DVD Playback – The first consumer device to support the new Microsoft Windows Media 9 Series playback in 720p high-definition (HD), the Equator DVD player reference design takes advantage of the advance compression technology from Microsoft to enable delivery of HD content using the existing red-laser DVD infrastructure. Future-Proof Design – Fully programmable, the Equator platform is codec-independent, giving the CE OEMs the flexibility to adopt new and emerging video standards. Similarly, value-added features such as home videoconferencing and PVR functionalities can be easily incorporated into the platform, giving it unlimited possibilities for product differentiation.

The Equator reference design will be available to license to OEMs worldwide from Equator, in Q1.

Equator will demonstrate its new DVD reference design during CES 2003 at booth #22197 in the South Hall from January 9 – 12, 2003. Additional Equator technology demonstrations at CES include Windows Media 9 Series video streaming, broadband video-on-demand (VOD) and IP-based home videoconferencing.
