Samsung Selects TI's Advanced Digital Audio Technology

1/10/2003 - Continuing to provide its customers with the industry's most comprehensive digital entertainment solutions, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) announced that Samsung has designed TI's highly-efficient digital audio amplifier technology into its new DVD Receiver Combo product. TI's high efficiency digital amplifiers enable the unique combination of high-quality audio amplification and AM/FM tuner with the traditional DVD combo features -- DVD and VCR functionality -- to provide consumers with a true home theater-in-a-box, complete with speakers. Samsung was working within a 90-day window to complete the working prototype and because of TI's highly experienced applications support, they were able to complete the prototype on schedule and under their amplifier cost target.

Samsung's new combo unit drives 50 watts (W) into the surround speakers and 100 W into the subwoofer, enhancing the home listening experience. TI's highly efficient TAS5026 and TAS5110 digital audio amplifiers are 10 times more efficient than analog amplifiers, enabling manufacturers to build much smaller profile designs and greatly increase the functions and features. The efficiency of TI's digital audio amplifiers enabled Samsung to quickly incorporate the functionality usually found in three separate components into one unit without sacrificing on size or price. In addition, just three months later, Samsung transformed this slender DVD combo from simply an idea to a working product, leveraging TI's customer support and overall semiconductor system integration.

"The DVD Receiver Combo packs the performance of several products into one with the first truly digital audio amplifier," said J.A. Kim, principal engineer for Samsung. "TI's design team support is amazing! TI helped us quickly turn our marketing ideas into reality, by incorporating incredible sound and features into this product."

"Samsung's DVD combo, leveraging TI's advanced digital audio technology, provides maximum performance for a minimum price," said Katsuhiko Iida of Lpro System, Inc., a Japanese audio consulting firm. "As the first reviewer of this product, I think Samsung's home theater- in-a-box is far superior in sound quality to anything on the consumer electronics market." Katsuhiko Iida has over 30 years of experience as an audio tuning specialist.

TI's six-channel TAS5026 PWM processor is a multi-channel digital amplifier targeted specifically at reducing the implementation costs in multi-channel systems. Combined with TI's power stages, this solution offers a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 96 decibels for DVD receivers and DVD mini-component systems. TI's TAS5110 power stage provides a 50W integrated, single-chip solution targeted for DVD receivers and other high quality home theater applications. With efficiencies greater than 90 percent, the TAS5110 provides an excellent low thermal dissipation solution for systems that require both high audio performance and space constraints.

The Samsung DVD combo is currently shipping in select regions and will begin shipping worldwide in Q1 2003.
