1/10/2003 - Lantronix®, Inc. (NASDAQ: LTRX) will showcase its SYS® automation technology in a network-enabled concept vehicle at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The concept vehicle will be on display to demonstrate the benefits of integrating an automobile's onboard systems with a home network.
Lantronix' SYS technology (from recent acquisition PremiseTM Systems) has been employed as the principle software platform. For the demonstration, a mock home that includes thermostats, a networked security camera, lighting and consumer audio/video gear will be installed adjacent to the concept vehicle. Integrated into the vehicle's instrument panel, touch screen controls and a biometric fingerprint reader facilitate authenticated access to operate both the vehicle and the off-board home systems.
"Because cars have always been an extension of the home environment and mobile networks are becoming more widespread, consumers want greater access to personal communications and other services such as media libraries. This inevitable evolution of the automobile is a natural next step for the automotive industry and a terrific fit for our software and device networking technologies," says Dan Quigley, executive vice president and general manager of Lantronix' Applications Division.
The demonstrated features of the concept vehicle include downloading user preferences, digital media, and integrated control of onboard and home systems. For example, activating an "Arrive" operation will cause the lights in the home to go on, set the thermostat to a comfortable temperature, disarm the security system and start personalized media on the home's entertainment system. A "Depart" operation works in an inverse manner.
The concept vehicle will employ an onboard Visteon computing platform networked to the home with 802.11 wireless technology. The vehicle will be on display at automotive supplier Visteon's booth OS-3 in the Silver Lot at the main entrance of the Las Vegas Convention Center from January 9-12.
Lantronix provides manufacturers with reliable and cost-effective products for intelligently networking anything to anyone. "In the end, this is another step towards our vision at Lantronix, where our customers and the consumers who purchase their products will no longer have to think about networking; it will just be there." said Quigley.
