Planetweb Extends Suite of Digital Entertainment Products With Unveiling of PVR Technology at CES 2003

1/9/2003 - Showcasing a suite of applications that puts consumers in complete control of their home entertainment, Planetweb, the leading developer of consumer electronics software applications and services for OEMs and silicon chip manufacturers worldwide, introduced personal video recording (PVR) technology at this year's CES (Central Hall, Booth #8253). Planetweb's FrontRowTM PVR application enables users to have more choice in their home entertainment experience than ever before.

FrontRow PVR offers consumers a full range of integrated digital video applications on next-generation devices with a one-stop broadcast video solution. The software delivers personalized, extended PVR features all seamlessly integrated into one intuitive interface including:

  • time-shifting
  • pause live television
  • skip forward in a recording
  • instant replay
  • simple program recording and archiving

In addition, FrontRow PVR provides additional options that give users more flexibility in creating their home entertainment experience, providing them with the tools to create their own program schedules, decide when they watch a program, set up parental controls, and record programming to create their own digital library.

"New features and functions like digital video recording and progressive scan represent a significant market opportunity for hardware manufacturers," said Tom Edwards, senior analyst at The NPD Group / NPD Techworld. "In light of increased sales of consumer electronics - during Thanksgiving week, Black Friday sales of consumer electronics and technology rose 10 percent to more than $500 million -- manufacturers are boosting profits further with enhanced devices. And down the line, given that more than 25 million DVD players were sold in 2002 and 70 percent of homes expected to have one in two years, we're going to see the DVD player as the most viable multimedia platform."

"Planetweb's FrontRow PVR technology delivers digital entertainment applications consumers are demanding on enhanced consumer electronic devices," said Ken Soohoo, president and CEO of Planetweb. "Planetweb's success within the audio and photo digital entertainment software markets, currently shipping on the latest DVD players from Samsung, Toshiba and Mitsubishi, provided the launching ground to extend our product offering. The PVR technology market is a natural progression for Planetweb as we expand our leadership position in home entertainment by enabling manufacturers to deliver uniquely intuitive entertainment features to their customers."

Since 1996 Planetweb has offered an entire suite of software designed to enhance digital devices. Today, more than five million Planetweb-enabled devices and applications have been shipped worldwide. Planetweb solutions have been ported to nine different chipsets, to more than 100 different SKUs of products for the top OEMs in the world, as well as to dozens of Internet-enabled devices.
