1/9/2003 - Adaptec, Inc. (Nasdaq: ADPT), the global leader in data storage access solutions, has been selected to provide its leading Ultra320 SCSI chip - the industry's fastest - for NEC Corporation's (Nasdaq: NIPNY) new line of servers designed to deliver optimum performance for mainline storage, e-commerce and other data-intensive applications.
"System performance and reliability are vital for our server customers as they work to manage and store growing amounts of information and support round-the-clock customer communications," said Tetsuya Fujita, chief manager of NEC Solutions' Client and Server Division. "Adaptec's proven Ultra320 SCSI solutions will allow us to deliver the highest levels of performance in our next-generation servers, enabling our customers to maximize application performance and return on investment."
Adaptec's Ultra320 controllers powered by the chip deliver data transfer rates of 273 megabytes per second over one channel and 546 megabytes per second over two channels, as much as 60 percent faster than the nearest competitor in backup and replication, server and workstation applications. Adaptec's Ultra320 products have attained peak input-output (I/O) performance of 105,000 I/O operations per second, also the industry's fastest.
NEC, one of the world's largest computer companies and Japan's top server provider, selected Adaptec's Ultra320 SCSI chip for its Express 5800 120Mf, 140Rc-4 and 140Hd servers. The Express 5800 140Rc-4 and 140Hd servers will be available early this month. The Express 5800 120Mf*, which began shipping in early December, features Adaptec's HostRAIDTM technology. Adaptec HostRAID delivers RAID data striping and mirroring to protect data and maximize system uptime and performance. Adaptec Ultra320 solutions also support four hard disk drives and two arrays per channel to provide the most storage capacity available from an integrated RAID controller.
"System performance and data protection are top priorities as organizations increasingly call on servers for 24x7 Internet communications and business transactions," said Ahmet Houssein, vice president and general manager of Adaptec's Storage Solutions Group. "Adaptec's Ultra320 solutions combine the performance required for bandwidth-hungry applications such as mainline storage, video editing, and streaming video and audio with the data protection required to support business-critical applications such as e-mail and e-commerce."
