9/25/2002 - California Micro Devices introduced two new Application Specific Integrated Passive (ASIPTM) products designed to protect VGA and DVI ports from electrostatic discharge (ESD). The new devices, the CM1208-07 and CM1208-08 expand California Micro Devices' family of integrated low-capacitance ESD protection devices by integrating 7 and 8 channels (respectively) of protection into a single device. Both products provide 8kV of ESD contact protection per the IEC61000-4-2 standard, with a typical capacitance of 3pF, making them ideal for higher speed ports. The CM1208-07 is intended for protecting VGA ports in desktop PCs, notebook computers, and docking stations. The CM1208-08 is targeted at Digital Visual Interface (DVI) ports and other 8-channel ports that are commonly found in PCs, graphics cards, set-top boxes, and televisions.
"There is a growing demand for ESD protection in today's PC and consumer electronic equipment," said Joe Salvador, director of marketing, computing products at California Micro Devices. "A consumer touching an exposed port during ordinary handling can generate an ESD strike measured in thousands of volts, which can easily cause permanent damage to a PC or set top box without adequate protection."
Each ESD protection channel in the CM1208-07/08 consists of a pair of diodes that steer the ESD current pulse to either the positive (Vp) or negative (Vn) supply rail. These devices use a diode clamp configuration based on a proven manufacturing process, developed by California Micro Devices, that is optimized for minimum capacitance while simultaneously providing superior ESD protection with low clamping voltage levels. Benefits of this technology include:
Pricing and Availability
The CM1208-07/08 is sampling now in a miniature MSOP-10 package. Production volume begins in Q4 2002. Pricing for the CM1208-07 is $0.45 and the CM1208-08 is $0.49 at 10,000 unit quantities.
