PLX GigaBridge Switched-PCI Enables High-speed Storage in PsiTech Imaging System

9/24/2002 - PLX Technology and PsiTech announced the PLX® GigaBridgeTM Switched-PCI technology has been designed into PsiTech's new Sirocco® high-speed storage system for imaging. PLX, a leading supplier of high-speed interconnect silicon to the communications industry, and PsiTech, a leading supplier of high-performance graphics imaging and storage, hardware and software, blended their respective technical expertise for the high-speed Sirocco. The Sirocco high-speed storage system begins shipping in October.

The Sirocco system contains a full CompactPCI Hot Swap active backplane built around a group of GigaBridge controllers. The GigaBridge controllers reside on the backplane, enabling compatibility and performance features characteristic of the GigaBridge architecture. The Sirocco system consists of four basic pieces: A CompactPCI backplane, CPU card, very-high-speed wide-area network (WAN) card, and multiple cache/hardware redundant arrays of inexpensive drives (RAID) controllers.

The PLX GigaBridge in Sirocco is the solution for the communication bottleneck between system components. Traditional bus architecture was well suited for single-processor-centric systems, but as these systems move more of the data transfer work to other components, the bus has become the bottleneck. PsiTech has abandoned the traditional bus backplane, moving to a backplane that is connected by a virtual cross point switch so that the bandwidth can keep pace. Using this type of active backplane, the Sirocco can move up to 4 GB/s of bandwidth in a single card cage. Multiple card cages can be linked together by multiple 5GB links to have a highly expandable system with the total bandwidth available increasing geometrically with the number of components.

The Sirocco's design allows the option of using nine or 13 GigaBridge controllers to connect the system components together. The backplane has 21 CompactPCI 66/64 slots, grouped as eight sets of two slot buses and one five-slot bus. The five-slot bus is the domain manager and control CPU. An additional connector on the backplane carries four GigaBridge M-Link interfaces. This connector allows installation of either a very high-speed interface card — in one application, OC192 — or connection cables to other chassis, containing other active backplanes with 21 more CompactPCI slots each. The resulting system allows a maximum bandwidth of over 1.6 GB/s from the high-speed communication interface to the cards in the 8 sub-buses. Because the connector carries 4 M-Links, multiple chassis can be connected together in a variety of topologies.
