9/23/2002 - Sun Microsystems announced the new iForceSM Perimeter Security solution, an enhanced Internet security solution, designed to help enterprises and service providers detect, prevent and respond quickly to today's security threats, such as the spread of viruses/worms and attacks from hackers, to a variety of malicious system and network level attacks. The Oklahoma City National Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center benefit from security collaboration.
The Oklahoma City National Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism (MIPT) has deployed the iForce Perimeter Security solution to create a multi-tier, secure web services solution to compile and disseminate comprehensive information on the social and political causes and effects of terrorism for first responders, researchers and policymakers. "MIPT enlisted the support of Sun to secure its web-enabled database system, providing records of terrorist incidents and indictments," said Brian K. Houghton, Director of Research for MIPT. "By leveraging the iForce Perimeter Security solution, we will deliver a secure environment on which we can provide comprehensive information to aid in counterterrorism research."
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, a premier cancer center for patient care, research, education and prevention, leverages six of the seven security elements of the iForce Perimeter solution to solve the complex problem of Internet security to secure its informational resources. "Sun's best-in-class integrated approach aligns well with the products and solutions we built to secure our information resources," said David Nester, CISSP, Security Architect for MD Anderson Cancer Center. "With the flexibility to choose the elements required to enhance our specific security needs, products such as AppShield from Sanctum, helps provide maximum security in minimal time to prevent, log and alert us with any type of known and unknown application manipulation or security threats through the browser."
The iForce Perimeter Security solution is an open, integrated security solution which combines software from Sun and six industry leaders in IP security, including two new partner solutions from e-Security and Sanctum. Sanctum will offer a web application firewall to help protect enterprises' mission critical digital assets. e-Security will provide a consolidated security event management control center, enabling fast and appropriate incident response.
"Customers are looking for an integrated approach to their perimeter security issues instead of the point-security solutions available today to protect their critical resources," said Joe Akers, director of Sun's Industry Solutions Group. "This integrated solution provides comprehensive Internet security through best-in-class applications, managed centrally, which enables customers to be better equipped to prevent attacks, detect intrusions and threats, and respond rapidly and decisively to these events."
The integrated approach of the iForce Perimeter Security solution offers a ready-to-deploy solution which provides enterprises and service providers with the flexibility to choose the elements required to enhance their specific Internet security needs, including a hardened operating environment, VPN, network firewall, Web application firewall, integrity assurance, virus detection, intrusion detection and decoy system, to security at the applications level. The solution also delivers a consolidated single management console that helps provide a global view of all elements in the security system to recognize and respond to attacks quickly.
This single, integrated defense system allows companies to quickly deploy a multi-layer Internet security solution to protect vital business information and networks by combining seven essential components:
In addition, Sun Services offers technical consulting, training and support services for further custom design and integration. These best-in-class security elements interoperate through Check Point's OPSEC (Open Platform for Security) certification framework, to deploy a secure network environment across the internet data center, enterprise or any large scale network.
