Oak Technology Drives New Levels of Laser Driven Image Quality

9/16/2002 - Oak Technology, a leading provider of embedded solutions for optical storage and digital imaging markets, announced the availability of the PM-1100, a highly integrated pulse width modulator (PWM) and frequency synthesizer for laser printing devices. The patented technology solution provides enhanced precision sizing and placement of individual pixels in a laser-generated image, enabling superior image quality for the monochrome and growing color laser printing markets. The PM-1100's technological advancement in resolution enhancement further supports Oak's initiative to create integrated, cost-effective solutions to meet manufacturer demand for higher performance and quality in laser printing and copying products.

"The PM-1100 enables Oak to uniquely provide our OEM customers with an advanced ASIC that boasts an integrated modulator and synthesizer to embed in all classes of laser printing and copying peripherals," explained Simon Dolan, senior vice president and general manager, Oak Technology's Imaging Group. "The device provides an integrated, high-performance solution that does not require the support of discrete components, and as a result, gives our customers the invaluable advantages of cost-effectively delivering increased printer image quality while still bringing them to market quickly."

The PM-1100 provides exceptional precision control of pulse width and position allowing OEMs to implement complex image processing. The PM-1100 expands Oak's use of its market-proven Arbitrary Waveform Synthesizer (AWS) technology with the integration of a frequency synthesizer while providing high-precision pulse width and position modulation at an increased speed of 100 MHz. Oak's proprietary AWS technology is a fully digital and self-calibrating design based on a free running loop of delay elements. Combined with front-end logic to perform the required arithmetic calculations, the AWS can generate any desired output waveform based on a single reference clock input. Oak has made use of the AWS technology in developing two previous generations of PWM products widely deployed in the laser printer market.

The PM-1100's integrated frequency synthesizer eliminates the need for generating the video clock in the OEM controller. The integrated digital frequency synthesizer will generate the video pixel clock, programmable over the range of 10 MHz to 100 MHz, from an independent arbitrary input reference clock (10 MHz to 66 MHz). The PM-1100's frequency synthesizer and PWM are implemented using the same AWS technology. The two functionalities are merged into a single module, with two separate arithmetic front ends. The generation of the video pixel clock and the video output pulse are performed simultaneously in a single module, leading to the elimination of clock jitter and noise, and providing unprecedented precision of the output pulse. In addition, this integration leads to great flexibility in manipulating the video pixel clock, as the PM-1100 incorporates a feature where the video pixel clock frequency can be dynamically varied within a scan line.

Additional functions integrated in the PM-1100 include a LVDS driver for cost-effective design, complete margin controls for page printing, beam detect synchronization for precise scan line alignment and look-up-tables that optimize video output to the specific engine/toner system and/or user desired operating characteristics. These integrated features simplify the OEM printer controller design bringing state-of-the-art technology to peripherals at both low and high-end products at all performance levels providing significant cost savings to the OEM.

PM-1100 engineering samples are available now. Full production will begin in the fourth quarter of 2002.
