9/16/2002 - Equator Technologies, a leading provider of high-performance, programmable and power-efficient system-on-a-chip processors for video streaming and image processing applications, and Media Excel, a provider of sophisticated software compression technologies, announced their relationship to provide Media Excel’s SoftStream Software Development Kits for MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 real-time compression technologies on Equator’s flagship BSP-15 system-on-a-chip processors. Media Excel’s software development toolkits allow manufacturers of video-centric consumer electronic appliances to support standards-based compression technologies and add differentiation based on post-processing or to combine components to produce transcoding or transrating applications. The Equator BSP-15 chip provides enough performance to consider these extras. Together, Media Excel and Equator provide manufacturers of DVD players, VOD systems, personal video recorders and other video-centric consumer electronic appliances with standards-based offerings and unprecedented performance and opportunity for product differentiation or just-in-time manufacturing.
Media Excel offers MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 software development toolkits today on Equator’s StingRayTM-based solutions. Additionally, Media Excel is porting its full suite of MPEG compression and playback software development kits to Equator’s TetraTM Linux platform. Transcoding and transrating technologies are important, not only on head-end service provider equipment, but also in the home gateway environment where consumers can reap the benefits of wired or wireless access to video. With software toolkits and a hardware platform that readily support video processing needs as well as system needs, manufacturers and service providers have unlimited potential.
"Our BSP-15 chip not only meets the needs for those supporting existing MPEG-2 content, but also the growing need for high-resolution, low bit-rate, real-time MPEG-4 and follow-on media technologies. Media Excel’s Softstream Software Development Kits are a wonderful way to enable differentiation," said Avi Katz, president and CEO of Equator. "Our BSP-15 chip offers unbeatable value propositions – price, performance, programmability and ultimately time-to-market. We are pleased to announce our relationship with Media Excel. The resulting combination of hardware and software solutions is a powerful offering of high quality real-time standards-based video at a price and power point that meets the needs of consumer manufacturers."
"Equator’s high-performance system-on-a-chip processor family allows Media Excel to build sophisticated compression algorithms in a timely fashion, while offering real-time MPEG-2 MP@ML, 4:2:2 Profile and MPEG-4 advanced profile with transcoding solutions to the marketplace," said Jongil Kim, president and CTO of Media Excel. "Our relationship with Equator provides Media Excel with the opportunity to introduce Media Excel’s real-time software compression technologies to customers and markets that we could not reach otherwise."
