9/12/2002 - Texas Instruments announced that Global Sun Technology, a partner of TI in wireless local area network (WLAN) development, has received a certification from the Telecom Engineering Center (TELEC) for its WLAN PC card and access point products, which incorporate TI's ACX100 WLAN processor. The ACX100 fully supports the IEEE 802.11b standard and also offers PBCC modulation, a wireless transmission technology developed by TI enabling a high-speed 22Mbps data rate, which is 2X the standard 802.11b transmission speed, and extended range capabilities.
GST Inc., a wireless equipment manufacturer based in Taiwan, provides TI-based WLAN modules to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original design manufacturers (ODMs) worldwide. With TELEC certification of GST products, TI's WLAN solutions for PC cards and access points are now certified for deployment in Japan. An external organization affiliated with the Ministry of General Affairs, TELEC provides technical standards validation and certification services for wireless equipment and facilities in Japan.
"Now that our PC card and access point incorporating TI's WLAN chip have been certified by TELEC, any TI-based 22Mbps product can be used in Japan once certified. This is very welcome news for the Japanese customers who have been considering using TI's WLAN chips and 22Mbps capabilities," said Roger Wu, vice president of GST.
Since PBCC modulation allows high-speed throughput and also covers a wider area, it is ideal for a wireless LANs at home and offices. Three WLAN equipment manufacturers have already released products leveraging TI's 22Mbps technology for extended data rates and range in the US.
"TELEC certification will help expand the use of TI's solutions in WLAN equipment for the Japanese market, since any product using TI's 2x mode for 22Mbps operation can now be certified. ACX100-based products have now received Wi-Fi and TELEC certification, which enables OEMs in Japan to take advantage of the affordable, high-performance rate and range capabilities that TI has brought to the WLAN market," said Eiji Kuki, broadband communications product director, TI Japan.
