9/10/2002 - Sonim Technologies, a leading provider of IP-based Instant Communication solutions for wireless data networks, announced that it has finalized a Platinum Technology Partner agreement with Symbian, the developer of Symbian OS, the leading open standard operating system for data-enabled mobile phones. Sonim will work closely with Symbian to demonstrate the value of Push-To-Talk and voice messaging over GPRS networks to leading device and semiconductor manufacturers as well as global mobile carriers.
"Sonim is looking forward to the multiple benefits a relationship with Symbian brings, including accessibility to the wireless industry's top device and semiconductor manufacturers as well as the global carrier community," said Sonim CEO and President John Burns. "Sonim is committed to providing superior voice applications that help drive operator revenue. Our goal is to make IP-based Instant Communication ubiquitous across devices, and this partnership with Symbian takes us one step closer to our goal."
Sonim Technologies has developed end-to-end Instant Communication solutions that enable carriers to launch real-time voice and text services over wireless data networks. By dynamically optimizing bandwidth consumption to account for changing network types and conditions, the Sonim solution enables voice communication over heterogeneous wireless data networks.
The Symbian OS has been adopted by leading device manufacturers including, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Samsung and Siemens. Building on an existing relationship with Symbian that makes Sonim's products compatible with the Symbian 6.1 OS, the new partnership includes an agreement to offer Sonim's Instant Communication solutions for integration into Symbian's 7.0 OS. As a compatible solution, Sonim's platform will be available as additional functionality for all Symbian OS licensees.
"Symbian strives to provide its customers with innovative and compelling applications that will make a real difference to their bottom-line business objectives," said David Wood, executive vice president, partnering, evangelism and research, Symbian. "The Sonim Instant Communication platform offers feature-rich solutions that will in turn help to significantly increase operator revenue."
Sonim's open standards-based architecture is designed from the ground up to ensure high-availability and to meet the requirements of large-scale deployment. The thin client/smart server solution provides SIP-based call control and presence management, and leverages an extremely efficient transport protocol based on RTP to deliver superior quality real-time voice over wireless data networks. The Sonim Instant Communication server supports open specifications for mobile instant messaging and presence services, enabling interoperability with other messaging infrastructure.
