9/10/2002 - Amphion Semiconductor, the leading provider of semiconductor intellectual-property (IP) for digital video and wireless broadband system-on-a-chip (SoC) design has developed ASIC- and FPGA-targeted versions of its hardware-mapped accelerator cores for MPEG-4, MPEG-2, and JPEG2000 compression with AHB on-chip bus interface connectivity in compliance with AMBA® specification. The provision of Advanced High-Performance Bus (AHB) interfaces greatly enhances the applicability of Amphion's silicon-efficient codec core solutions to AMBA-based SoC designs - such as those leveraging ARM® processor solutions technology - for digital broadcast video, consumer movie-camera, and real-time imaging applications.
"With AHB-ported encoder cores for MPEG-4 and JPEG2000, Amphion has cornered the market for SoC-ready codec solutions for two key consumer-focused compression technologies." commented Stephen Farson, Vice President of Engineering at Amphion. "Chip designers, EDA vendors, and third-party IP providers have converged on the adoption of AHB connectivity to the point where it's generally accepted as the de facto on-chip bus standard bar none."
Originally proposed and developed by ARM, the leading supplier of 16-/32-bit embedded RISC processors, AMBA prescribes an on-chip bus (OCB) infrastructure for the interconnection and inter-working of application-specific IP, embedded processors and functional blocks. These system-level components are typically combined in SoC designs to integrate complex silicon platforms for digital convergence products from home gateway/set-top boxes to networked games consoles and other streaming-media enabled appliances.
About Amphion (www.amphion.com)
Amphion is the leading supplier of application-specific cores for System-on-a-Chip (SoC) integrated circuit designs for multimedia, data security, wireless and broadband communications. Amphion delivers high-performance solutions for video and image compression, advanced encryption, and speech and channel coding with a comprehensive range of silicon-optimized products. Using proprietary techniques to directly map digital signal processing functions and algorithms into hardware, Amphion develops and licenses semiconductor intellectual-property (SIP) cores that are close to optimal in terms of power, cycles, and area – computationally up to several orders of magnitude more efficient than equivalent functions implemented on a programmable processor. Amphion cores operate standalone, or by direct interface to industry-standard RISC and DSP processors, and can be easily migrated through successive generations of fabrication technology, thus preserving engineering investments in SoC design. Amphion is a privately held company with corporate headquarters and engineering in Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK, and worldwide sales and marketing headquarters in San Jose, Calif. Amphion was formerly known as Integrated Silicon Systems Ltd, or ISS.
