Kontron Introduces New Embedded Module Based on the Intel IXP425 Network Processor

9/9/2002 - After DIMM-PC® and ETX, Kontron Embedded Modules formerly known as JUMPtec AG, introduces its third open-standard module. The new Kontron® X-boardTM modules address the classic "build-not-buy market". In addition to the well-known "x86" compatible designs, the Kontron X-board is targeted to utilize other CPU platforms.

The Intel® IXP425 network processor, which is based on Intel® XScaleTM Technology, provides low power consumption and high performance for embedded communications applications. Offering numerous interfaces for the communication and automation needs, the Kontron X-board based on the Intel IXP425 network processor, will allow OEM customers to get a head start using a ready to design solution from Kontron Embedded Modules.

"Kontrons line of X-board products using the Intel IXP425 network processor offers performance, integration and other features that make it ideal for the embedded market segments Kontron serves," says Steve Price, general manager of Intels Integrated Access Business Unit.

Stepping into the world of "non x86" CPU architectures, the Kontron X-board targets applications such as Man-Machine-Interfaces, Print-Servers, Security and surveillance systems, VoIP routers, and gateways. The module concept allows engineers to use a stable, software-supported core for the embedded application. This allows fast time to market and minimizes design risk. A rich set of tools and drivers for operating systems such as Windows®CE.net, Linux, or VxWorks* will further enhance the success of the embedded application designers.

"The market segments Kontron serves have requirements in terms of integration, power consumption and performance that can be very well served by our Intel IXP425 based Kontron X-board line of products", indicated Hans Muehlbauer, COO of Kontron and founder of Jumptec. "We believe our Intel IXP425 based solutions will open new market opportunities in the embedded networking and communication segments."

The Kontron® X-boardTM using the Intel IXP425 network processor is planned to be introduced into the embedded world by early 2002. A development system and Windows®CE.net support offering, is planned to be available by the product launch.
