Agilent Technologies Announces Dust-tight Absolute Optical Encoders for Industrial Automation Applications

9/5/2002 - Agilent Technologies announced the availability of its first absolute optical encoder products that provide position information without requiring shaft movement. Typical applications for the Agilent AEAS-7 series absolute encoders are automated machine tools, wafer transfer machines for semiconductor production, and robots used in automotive production and other heavy manufacturing lines.

The AEAS-7 series absolute encoders generate a unique binary word for each shaft position. This allows the absolute encoder to provide position information instantly upon power up, without requiring the initial movement or homing sequence called for by conventional incremental encoders.

"With today's announcement, Agilent becomes the first global supplier of both absolute and incremental encoders, " said Azhar Amin, marketing manager for Agilent's Motion Control Products Division. "We can now satisfy our customers' full encoder needs, providing them procurement cost savings and a complete one-stop shop worldwide."

The AEAS-71AC and AEAS-72AC series units are 50 mm in diameter and fitted with sealed bearings. They are rated IP65 under CENELEC/IEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission) standard 529, indicating they are dust tight and protected against streams of non-corrosive liquids for operation in dirty or damp environments. Both series offer 8-bit or 10-bit resolution, a choice of binary or gray code output, and are available with a hollow (71AC) or solid shaft (72AC).

The AEAS-72AA series, with an encoder diameter of 38 mm, is Agilent's smallest and most cost-effective absolute encoder — ideal for applications with space or cost constraints. The encoders are rated at IP50 (dust will not affect operation, no liquid protection), and provide 8-bit resolution, gray code output and a solid shaft configuration.

U.S. Pricing and Availability
The Agilent AEAS-7 series absolute encoders are immediately available for volume order through Agilent's sales offices worldwide. They are also available through Agilent's distribution partners. The AEAS-7AC series is priced at approximately $380 each; the AEAS-72AC series is priced at approximately $350 each; and the AEAS-72AA series is priced at approximately $188 each, all in 30-piece quantities.
