8/23/2002 - SoftConnex Technologies, a leading provider of Universal Serial Bus (USB) software solutions for the embedded market, announced that Motorola Broadband Communications Sector is integrating USBLink Host, SoftConnex's USB host software solution, into three of its set-top terminals developed for the European market. Motorola will integrate USBLink Host into the Motorola DVi3500, DVi4000, and DVi5000 set-tops, providing European Multiple System Operators (MSOs) with the software infrastructure required to transform a cable television transceiver into a home gateway that can support a wide variety of USB devices, such as printers, digital still cameras, MP3 players and wireless products.
"By integrating USBLink into its line of interactive set-tops, Motorola is giving subscribers around the world access to a whole new realm of advanced, interactive services," said Jim Gilbert, SoftConnex's vice president of marketing and business development. "We're pleased to work with a digital set-top leader like Motorola, and we look forward to enabling operators to provide the new, revenue-generating services that subscribers demand."
SoftConnex's USB solution interfaces with Motorola's operating system API to provide MSOs with maximum flexibility when it comes to selecting the operating system and middleware for their systems. USBLink also adds plug-and-play functionality to Motorola set-top platforms, thereby bringing USB's easy-to-use, widely adopted connectivity interface to the European set-top market.
"SoftConnex's USBLink Host is a key component of our connectivity strategy for the DVi3500, DVi4000, and DVi5000 platforms", said Carl McGrath, vice president and general manager of Motorola Broadband's digital consumer gateways business. "By licensing this advanced USB software solution available for the embedded market, and relying upon SoftConnex's highly experienced engineering team to handle the integration with our set tops, we raise the bar for set-top functionality, and lay the foundation for broadcasters to deliver a new array of interactive services to consumers."
SoftConnex's USBLink Host solution is comprised of the host controller driver layer, USB protocol layer and a class module framework. The host controller layer is responsible for driving USB 1.1 and 2.0 host controllers, while the protocol layer enumerates USB devices and simulates a plug and play environment with the host operating system when the USB supports external devices. All USB protocols are supported, as are complex USB devices that contain multiple configurations/interfaces and alternate settings. The USBLink Host class drivers are responsible for driving each type of device, such as printers, digital still cameras, MP3 players and DOCSIS modems. In addition, USBLink Host provides an interface for selected Bluetooth stacks and Bluetooth baseband modules through its USB Bluetooth class.
