Sun SunPlex System for Enhanced Performance on Oracle 9i Real Application Clusters

8/21/2002 - Sun Microsystems announced enhancements to its highly available SunPlexTM environment for Oracle9i Real Application Clusters, which will provide customers with greater performance and scalability. The SunPlex environment with Oracle9i Real Application Clusters is designed to deliver the highest level of availability for customers and application services. Through the use of Sun's Remote Shared Memory (RSM) technology and high-bandwidth low-latency interconnects, Oracle9i Real Application Clusters is optimized for superior application communication across the nodes in a cluster. Oracle9i Real Application Clusters is the first software to integrate with Sun's RSM Application Programming Interface (RSMAPI) messaging model. SunTM Cluster 3.0 software with Oracle9i Real Application Clusters provides customers with higher utilization of cluster resources.

"The powerful combination of our advanced cluster technology with Oracle's industry-leading Oracle9i RAC database will help customers such as Siemens gain real-time access to its databases and improve the company's overall customer service and bottom line," said Andy Ingram, vice president of Solaris marketing, Sun Microsystems. "Together, Sun and Oracle continue to deliver tightly integrated, industry-first solutions to give companies the competitive advantage necessary in today's rapidly changing business environment."

"Our customers rely on Oracle and Sun to deliver a joint clustered solution that meets their critical scalability and availability demands," said Doug Kennedy, vice president, Platform Alliances, Platform Technology Division, Oracle Corporation. "The expansion to 4-node cluster support and integration with Sun's RSMAPI furthers our joint vision of delivering a high-performing and reliable cluster platform that considers business needs now and into the future."

Currently, the Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group (IC Mobile) utilizes the SunPlex environment, enabled by Sun Cluster 3.0 software, besides other technologies, with Oracle9i Real Application Clusters for their @vantage scalable server architecture to help deliver higher resiliency of application services to their customers. The SunPlex system Siemens utilizes with SolarisTM Operating Environment, Sun Cluster 3.0 software and Oracle9i Real Application Clusters in a 4-node configuration provides Siemens IC Mobile with:

"After extensive testing, we selected the Sun Cluster 3.0 software because it increased our speed to market and met our design specifications, while assuring highest system availability. Both speed to market and high availability help us to significantly improve customer satisfaction and save valuable time and resources," said Dr. Valentin Chapero Rueda, president of Networks within the Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group. "In order to stay competitive in critical markets, such as wireless technology, Siemens needed to not only meet, but exceed the high performance demands of emerging 2.5 and 3G wireless data services. Siemens' @vantage wireless multivendor platform relies also on Sun Cluster 3.0 and Oracle9i Real Application Clusters for industry-leading performance."

SunPlex environment with Remote Shared Memory boosting the performance of Oracle9i Real Application Clusters is the latest example in the long history of successful collaboration between Sun and Oracle to deliver leading-edge technology to customers. Sun also provides 4-node support for Oracle9i Real Application Clusters in the SunPlex environment, allowing customers to scale up to 424 CPUs in their cluster.

About Oracle9i Real Application Clusters
Oracle9i Database with Real Application Clusters is Oracle's next-generation cluster technology, and is the result of more than ten years of development, which led to 16 patents, with 29 additional patents pending. Based on Oracle (Nasdaq:ORCL) Cache Fusion Architecture, Oracle9i Real Application Clusters delivers nearly linear scalability and unbreakable reliability for all applications. Oracle9i Real Application Clusters provides transparent application scalability by quickly and efficiently sharing frequently accessed data across all the computers in the cluster.

About SunPlex system/ Sun Cluster 3.0 software
Sun Cluster software, a key component of the SunPlex environment, is designed to deliver high-availability application services to the datacenter or enterprise. Sun Cluster software extends the Solaris Operating Environment, enabling the use of core Solaris services, such as devices, file systems, and networks, in a virtually seamless manner across a tightly coupled cluster, while maintaining full Solaris Operating Environment compatibility for existing applications. The SunPlex environment — built around Sun Cluster software as well as the Solaris Operating Environment and Sun server, storage, and network connectivity products and services — helps increase service levels while helping to decrease service level cost and risk.
