SST's New Ultra-Thin Package Reduces Height By 60 Percent Compared to Standard 8-Pin SOIC Devices

8/20/2002 - SST (Silicon Storage Technology), a leader in flash memory technology, introduced a new flash memory package specifically designed for height-restricted portable electronic devices such as laptop computers, cellular phones, MP3 players and electronic games. The new ultra-thin, small outline, no lead package is termed WSON by SST, and is a type of QFN (quad flat no-lead) package with contacts on only two sides of the unit. Measuring a mere 5 mm x 6 mm x 0.75 mm, SST's WSON package is approximately 60 percent thinner than standard 8-pin SOIC (small outline integrated circuit) packages. However, despite its ultra-thin profile, the WSON package has contact points at the same physical locations and with the same signal-to-pin assignments as standard 8-pin SOIC packages, thereby providing an easy footprint compatible replacement for use in low-profile devices.

SST will initially offer its WSON package for its serial flash memory product family. SST's serial flash memory products are targeted towards power- and size-sensitive portable electronic applications such as 2.5-inch and smaller hard disk drives in laptop computers, which will benefit greatly from the extremely low-height and small footprint of the WSON package.

"There are several types of ultra-thin packages in the marketplace today, but they are often too expensive to be useful for a broad scale of flash memory applications," said Eugene Feng, business director, Application Specific Product Group, SST. "With the WSON package, SST gives customers the benefit of an extremely low-height package with a small footprint, while still maintaining a low overall cost structure. Furthermore, packaging our serial flash family in the WSON package not only allows designers to maintain board compatibility, but because we were able to design each density with the same footprint, it allows them to easily migrate to higher densities of flash without having to change the board layout."

As part of its effort to support environmentally safe products, SST offers the new WSON package with both a conventional tin/lead (Sn/Pb) solder and a lead-free (non-Pb) solder for customers striving to create environment-friendly products.
