8/12/2002 - Venture Development Corporation (VDC) concluded a study of the North American and European merchant markets titled "Merchant Markets and Applications for AC/DC Switching Power Supplies, DC/DC Converters, and Telecom Rectifiers: North America, 9th Edition, Europe, 3rd Edition". This year VDC included in its research telecom type rectifiers and DC/DC converters as a subset of the first two products.
VDC uses the term "telecom type" to signify the increasing cross-over between industrial end users, data communications and telecommunication end users which utilize telecom type rectifiers, modules or front-end power units to supply power to their equipment. Power marketers often identify rack mount power supplies with the terms "telecom type rectifier."
This AC/DC and/or DC/DC equipment is used in traditional wireline installations to power the equipment in telecommunications central offices, plus in the growing markets of systems networking including fiber optic networks, regeneration sites, wireless applications and installations, mobile phone switching offices and antenna sites.
This consumption of power supplies should be viewed in the business environment where the well-established convergence of data communications and telecom has occurred while the market juggles with the demands for networks, embedded systems, intelligent networked devices and power supplies that work together efficiently. According to VDC analyst Joan Plante, "Although the dot-com business was a great disappointment in 2000 and 2001, the Internet infrastructure will continue to create opportunities for switching power supplies. This will be through vendor focus on the key sectors of the communications industry, including computing/mass storage, carrier/enterprise solutions, wireless infrastructure and network access technologies."
