8/8/2002 - M-Systems, a leader in flash disk data storage products, and Accelerated Technology, the Embedded Systems Division of Mentor Graphics, are cooperating to support mass data storage within mobile platforms from Texas Instruments.
As part of this cooperation, Accelerated Technology and M-Systems are porting M-Systems' patented TrueFFS® flash management software to the NucleusTM real time operating system (RTOS). This will enable developers to more easily integrate M-Systems' Mobile DiskOnChip into products based on TI's open multimedia applications platform (OMAP) 1510 and 710 running AT's Nucleus RTOS.
OMAP architecture includes an ARM-based CPU and TI's real-time Digital Signal Processor (DSP) functionality. It allows developers to create mobile applications for different market segments by using standard Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) that are available through popular operating systems (OSs).
The Accelerated Technology® Nucleus RTOS powers embedded applications on many different CPUs in applications that range from extremely simple to extremely complex. The Nucleus RTOS provides an extensive set of services to manage multiple tasks, inter-task communication and synchronization, events, memory, timers, hardware interrupts, and software signals. The Nucleus RTOS presents a cost-effective alternative for the mobile market, which typically is characterized by large-scale projects and high sensitivity to cost.
"Mobile handsets often require fast boot and have limited memory capacity. The Nucleus RTOS has been prevalent in such devices as its modular architecture and small footprint make it an ideal choice,"said Robert Day, director of marketing for Mentor Graphics' Embedded Systems Division. "Having M-Systems' TrueFFS flash file system ported to the Nucleus RTOS now provides developers using Mobile DiskOnChip with a seamless integration to the Nucleus file system and enables developers of mobile handsets to benefit from Mobile DiskOnChip capacity, performance and reliability using our royalty free RTOS."
"Mobile DiskOnChip presents a PC-like memory architecture to smart phones, in which full scale graphical OSs and added value, data rich applications are introduced, many ported from desktop PCs," said Arie Tal, M-Systems' marketing manager for Mobile DiskOnChip. "Customers using or evaluating Nucleus as their OS of choice can now easily integrate the NAND based Mobile DiskOnChip into their design, both as boot and a mass storage, disk-like, media."
The OMAP architecture has become the de facto standard for 2.5 and 3G wireless devices. Leading OEMs including Nokia, Ericsson, Sony, Sendo, HTC and several others have selected the OMAP platform for their next generation wireless handsets and advanced mobile Internet devices. A broad range of leading software developers is currently creating wireless applications for next-generation mobile devices on the OMAP platform.
