8/6/2002 - California Micro Devices introduced a very low dropout 4.75V 150mA regulator designed specifically to filter out unwanted noise from a 5V supply, making it ideal for notebook and desktop PCs. The CMPWR161 is also well-suited for other consumer electronics devices such as game players and set-top boxes. The LDO exhibits excellent power supply ripple rejection even with a very low voltage differential between Vin and Vout, isolating the regulator output from any noise on the input supply across the entire audio band. This allows system designers to improve sound quality while using existing audio codecs typically found in today's PCs and notebook computers.
"Typical notebook and desktop PC power supplies are prone to voltage variations that can noticeably degrade audio quality when these variations are allowed to reach the audio codec," said Joe Salvador, director of marketing for computing products for California Micro Devices. "Our CMPWR161 was designed to provide excellent ripple rejection in the audio band, making it ideal for powering the latest generation of digital audio subsystems in PCs and consumer electronics."
Superior Sound Quality
Due to the nature of switching regulators, significant noise can be introduced into the audio system which degrades the system's audio quality, often producing noticeable affects such as static and hissing. The CMPWR161 solves this problem by regulating and filtering the power supply. It provides excellent ripple rejection from Vin to Vout with very low dropout (110mV) and significantly reduces the noise on the power line within the entire audio band (20 Hz to 20 KHz), providing superior sound quality. The product can also be used in non-PC applications wherever sensitive analog circuits needing 5V supplies are used. The CMPWR161 is available in the tiny 5-pin SOT-23 package, ideal for space critical applications.
