8/5/2002 - Ampro Computers, the inventor and leading supplier of PC/104 and EBX form-factor single board computers and EnCore processor-independent modules for embedded applications, will partner with TimeSys Corporation, a pioneer and leader in Embedded Linux and Java development technologies. Ampro and TimeSys will jointly supply a complete Linux operating system and development environment to accelerate the deployment of EnCore-based next generation OEM devices using embedded Linux. TimeSys was named as the exclusive Linux for distribution with Ampro's QuickStart Development Kits for MIPS, PowerPC and x86 architectures.
"The objective of the partnership," said Joanne Williams, president and CEO of Ampro Computers, Inc, "is to ensure that Ampro's OEM customers can quickly and easily drive Linux-based products to market built on the flexible, standards-based EnCore embedded computing platform."
"The Ampro partnership is an important step in the execution of our overall strategy of becoming the operating system of choice for the embedded Linux marketplace," said Larry Weidman, CEO of TimeSys Corporation. "They are leaders in standards-based embedded computing solutions having pioneered the embedded PC industry. This partnership will let system engineers speed their time-critical products to market with flexible, off-the-shelf modules and a robust, certified Linux OS in one complete, proven package."
The agreement further solidifies the position of the EnCore platform as the industry's leading modular processor solution featuring both Intel Architecture (x86) and advanced RISC-based embedded microprocessors.
"We are pleased to be working with TimeSys in standardizing on a single, compatible, cross-architecture Linux solution for Ampro single board computers and EnCore modules," stated Paul Rosenfeld, Ampro's vice president of marketing. "This relationship gives Ampro's customers an advantage by establishing a software framework to mesh with Ampro hardware solutions for their advanced processor-based implementations. While there is a broad range of Linux code available for the different processor architectures in Ampro's product line, a significant investment would be required by each OEM using Linux to get the code ported, running and validated. Together, Ampro and TimeSys are providing a proven, fully validated platform, which will greatly reduce the effort required to develop and deploy Linux-based systems. TimeSys is showing significant leadership within the embedded Linux community with its SDK certification, networking, and real-time capabilities."
EnCore modules are similar in concept to high-integration chips, interfacing directly to a designer's form-factor-independent system board containing application-specific logic and I/O connections. EnCore technology coupled with embedded operating systems allows designers to focus their design resources on their application-specific system board and application software. This combination of proven, off-the-shelf processor hardware and certified Linux software will give system OEMs a crucial advantage in time-to-market.
EnCore modules interface to a baseboard through up to 272 pins that provide the PCI bus, I/O signals and power and ground. A typical EnCore module includes CPU, 10/100 BaseT Ethernet, up to 512MB DRAM, sound, flash memory, serial, parallel and USB ports with support for IDE compatible devices. It may also include a 3D graphics controller. EnCore modules are 100mm x 145mm (3.94" x 5.70") allowing wide flexibility in baseboard footprint.
The first result of the partnership will be the release of TimeSys Linux for Ampro's EnCore PP1 module based on a 300MHz Motorola MPC8245 PowerPC processor. The software will be provided with Ampro's EnCore PP1 QuickStart Kit, which sells for $795 and will be available for download.
About Ampro Computers, Inc. (www.ampro.com)
Ampro Computers, Inc. is the leading global provider of modular embedded computing solutions for OEM applications. Ampro's mission is to provide time saving solutions for embedded systems designers that accelerate the product deployment process. Ampro pioneered the embedded PC industry creating the popular PC/104 and EBX standards. The new EnCore family enables designers to obtain all the benefits of an off-the-shelf CPU solution while maintaining the flexibility of a full custom design. In addition to EnCore, Ampro offers three product lines; PC/104-compatible CoreModule CPUs and MiniModule expansion products, and EBX form factor Little Board single-board computers (SBC). Ampro was awarded Electronique magazine's "Electron d'Or 2002" for subsystems for the EnCore M2 product.
About TimeSys Corporation (www.timesys.com)
TimeSys is a pioneer and leader in Embedded Linux and Java development technologies. Its products allow design engineers to leverage the power, flexibility and reliability of a new class of development tools for advanced embedded systems for a variety of markets and applications, covering the complete performance range from non-real-time to deterministic hard real-time, using both open-source and proprietary technologies. TimeSys is considered the top choice by systems architects for developing more robust, less expensive, single API Linux solutions for embedded systems. TimeSys was the first to create a reservation technology that guarantees system response, even in overloaded systems.
