8/2/2002 - Sun Microsystems is shipping two new drives with the SunTM StorEdge 3900 and 6900 storage systems, the 181 GB high density disk drive and the 36 GB 15,000 RPM high performance disk drive. The new drives provide Sun customers double the storage capacity in the same footprint, giving them the opportunity to lower their storage systems cost by half and making the Sun StorEdge 3900 and 6900 the most cost-effective and high performing midrange storage platform for the SolarisTM Operating Environment.
Recent industry analyst reports estimated the midrange market for storage to be approximately $5-6 billion. Sun's leadership in this area is demonstrated by an increasing demand for the midrange storage systems. In the five months since introducing the Sun StorEdge 3900 and 6900 series, Sun has sold over 700 terabytes of storage capacity.
The new 181 GB and 36 GB 15,000 RPM drives will help Sun deliver greater, more efficient performance to midrange storage customers. The addition of the 181 GB disk drives to Sun's midrange systems will help more than double the capacity in the same footprint, from an estimated 11 terabytes to more than 29 terabytes in a maximum configuration. This solution helps drive down costs across the IT environment, from acquisition and administration, to maintenance and software licensing, while keeping power consumption at parity with lower capacity systems.
The addition of the 36 GB 15,000 RPM disk drives to the Sun StorEdge 3900 and 6900 series is expected to enhance the performance of the storage solutions by 50 percent, while response times for random read and write are expected to increase by more than 30 percent.
"The Sun StorEdge 3960 system has helped us minimize costs by enabling us to add capacity incrementally to match our business requirements," said Rudy Munguia, director of Infrastructure for PAR3 Communications. "We look forward to the addition of the 36 GB 15,000 RPM disk drive to step-up performance and availability while affording us the same scalability we've come to appreciate."
The new high density, highly cost efficient, and higher performing storage systems, enabled by the new disk drives, will help Sun offer greater asset utilization efficiencies and enhanced performance. Combined with already highly granular and flexible management features, and leveraging the Sun StorEdge software suites, the new drives help solidify Sun's ability to offer complete storage solutions that span the entire end-to-end IT infrastructure that storage-only vendors cannot deliver. These enhanced storage systems will also help the company continue its commitment to drive down total cost of ownership and improve storage performance for midrange storage customers.
"As our customers continue to face increasing storage requirements with decreasing budgets, they are demanding more cost-effective, higher performing storage solutions." said Bill Groth, director of product marketing for Sun's storage organization. "Enhancing Sun's midrange storage systems with the 181 GB high density and high performance 36 GB 15,000 RPM drives demonstrates that Sun is delivering on its promise to provide complete storage solutions that improve productivity, enhance performance and drive down storage TCO for customers."
