Sunny Capital Chooses NMS Communications for First Voice over Broadband Product Deployment at China's Leshan Telecom

7/31/2002 - NMS Communications (NASDAQ: NMSS), the leading supplier of technology for tomorrow's networks, worked with network equipment provider Beijing Sunny Capital Communications to deploy the first voice over broadband solution at Leshan Telecom, a China Telecom subsidiary. Sunny Capital's SCX-1000 voice over broadband (VoBB) product is based on NMS platforms and technologies, specifically the Convergence Generation™ (CG) 6100C high-density digital trunk interface, ATM interfaces, echo cancellation, and Signaling System 7 interfaces to the public switched telephone network. Sunny Capital Communications also engaged NMS to provide planning, design, and implementation expertise that significantly expedited the field trial.

Sunny Capital Communications' SCX-1000 VoBB product is in trial at the Sichuan-based carrier to provide voice over Digital Subscriber Line (VoDSL) service. VoDSL uses the same connection to deliver both voice and data services, which particularly benefits the proliferation of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in China and Korea looking to reduce network costs by combining broadband lines for both telephony and data services. The SME market (up to 24 lines) is the "sweet spot" in the VoDSL target market since users at the lower end are unlikely to require the multiple lines offered by VoDSL while the higher end have access to much higher bandwidth services at competitive prices.

According to a report published earlier this year by telecom market analyst firm RHK, China and other nations in the Asia Pacific region now lead the world in DSL subscriber growth and network build-out, with Asia Pacific now accounting for approximately 44 percent of the world's DSL subscribers. RHK expects the growth trend to continue as China, Japan, South Korea, and other countries upgrade their telecom infrastructures.

"We chose NMS for this important project because of its proven platforms technology and experience in carrier-grade deployments. The field trial at Leshan Telecom is particularly significant for Sunny Capital Communications because we are a leader in researching and developing broadband voice technologies and applications in China," said Shen Er, general manager of Sunny Capital Communications. "Interest in broadband, especially DSL, is on an upswing throughout the nation as operators seek cost-efficient options to satisfy the voice and data needs of business and residential customers."

"This installation represents the global appeal of NMS' offerings, and highlights our ability to respond to shifts in market requirements such as Asia Pacific's growing dominance in deployment of DSL. We are pleased that our system building blocks and services have been instrumental in enabling Sunny Capital to meet Leshan Telecom's voice over broadband requirements," said Critz Chan, vice president and general manager of NMS Asia.

Sunny Capital Communications' SCX-1000 is a large-scale voice service platform that lets carriers deliver multi-line local telephone services over broadband access networks including DSL, wireless local loop (WLL), or E1. Designed to meet the reliability, availability, and serviceability needs of carrier-class telephone equipment, the SCX-1000 typically resides in regional switching centers and connects to a Class 5 switch. SCX-1000 can perform all the functions necessary to deliver hundreds of thousands of subscriber telephone lines over broadband access networks, including circuit-to-packet conversion, routing, call administration, traffic management, and security.
