7/30/2002 - NMS Communications (NASDAQ: NMSS), the leading supplier of technology for tomorrow's networks, has been chosen by WiseSpot, a Hong Kong-based wireless application provider, to supply the platform for new consumer interactive services designed to drive revenues for service providers and portals in the highly competitive Hong Kong market.
M-Channel, an innovative out-of-home media that operates LCD screens in public transportation vehicles and high-traffic locations, has already deployed a WiseSpot quiz game in which viewers call a dedicated number to answer questions and have the chance to win prizes. The application is enabled by NMS' Alliance Generation (AG) 4000, a platform product that handles all of the voice transferring and signaling among servers required for these automated processes.
WiseSpot's applications aim at providing their clients with unique ways to increase subscriber loyalty and revenue through various interactive customer relationship applications, such as lotteries and lucky draws, loyalty point reward programs and mobile games. Most are customized to deliver competitive differentiation and time-to-market advantages to their clients, which requires WiseSpot to be extremely responsive and to create new applications rapidly. To meet its need for a flexible and open telecommunications platform, WiseSpot found that the NMS AG 4000 platform best fits the bill.
"The NMS platform's flexibility and open architecture accelerated our service creation tremendously. We were ready to deliver the quiz game application within two weeks. This development could have taken months with other vendors' offerings," said Garrick Ng, WiseSpot's CTO. "NMS also has superior local support, which made them a valued partner rather than just a technology supplier."
As of January 2002, there were over 5.7 million subscribers of cellular phone services in Hong Kong -- a penetration rate of 85 percent, one of the highest in the world. Hong Kong's Internet network has also rolled out rapidly. Over 95 percent of all households and 100 percent of all commercial buildings are capable of linking up to broadband connections as of January 2002.
Voice-enhanced and Internet-related services offer telecom and Internet service providers a valuable competitive edge in this aggressive market. M-Channel's Chinese New Year quiz game, the first of a series of games to be devised by WiseSpot, attracted more than 11,000 people within the first week of launch.
"WiseSpot is focused on developing new technologies and applications to meet the demand for differentiated wireless interactive services in the Hong Kong market," said Critz Chan, vice president and general manager of NMS Asia. "Our partnership is a natural fit – WiseSpot has the expertise in creating the wireless and Internet applications required for operators to win in this market, and NMS has a long history of providing the systems and system building blocks for our customers and partners to bring solutions to market quickly and efficiently."
WiseSpot, a wireless application provider based in Hong Kong, was founded in 2001 by a team of information technology and telecommunications professionals with extensive experience in mobile device manufacturing, telecom service operation, and software development. The company offers a wide range of interactive and innovative solutions to service providers, Internet portals, and carriers. WiseSpot's clients include M-channel, Yahoo!
